WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration says it will allow an Iowa egg farm linked to a widespread salmonella outbreak to resume selling its shell eggs to consumers. Wright County Egg recalled 380 million eggs earlier this year after the farm and another Iowa operation, Hillandale Farms, were linked to more than 1,600 salmonella illnesses. A subsequent FDA inspection of the farms revealed dead chickens, insects, rodents, and towers of manure. In October, the FDA allowed Hillandale to resume shipping its eggs but sent Wright County Egg a letter saying the business could be shut...

IOWA CITY - Dozens of people sickened last year after eating salmonella-tainted eggs will receive compensation, including six-figure checks for two children, in the first wave of legal settlements with the Iowa egg producer blamed in the outbreak, attorneys in the case said. Wright County Egg, owned by egg magnate Jack DeCoster, reached financial settlements with about 40 salmonella victims during a Sept. 14 mediation conference in Minneapolis, both sides confirmed. The financial payouts come from the company's insurer, Selective Insurance.

WASHINGTON — Food and Drug Administration investigators have found rodents, seeping manure, and even maggots at the Iowa egg farms believed to be responsible for as many as 1,500 cases of salmonella poisoning. FDA officials released their initial observations of the investigations at Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms yesterday. The two farms recalled more than half a billion eggs after salmonella illnesses were linked to their products earlier this month. The reports show many different possible sources of contamination at both farms, including rodent, bug, and wild bird...

WASHINGTON — One of two Iowa farms that recalled millions of eggs this summer will start shipping its products to stores again, but the second farm could be shut down if it doesn’t clean up, the Food and Drug Administration said yesterday. In an Oct. 15 letter to Hillandale Farms the FDA said the company has adequately cleaned up its facilities after it was linked to 1,600 salmonella illnesses earlier this year. The FDA said an additional inspection of Hillandale this month showed no evidence of salmonella in the laying houses that are open for business.

Iowa’s Hillandale Farms said it was recalling eggs after tests confirmed illnesses associated with them. The company did not say how many eggs were being recalled or if it is connected to Wright County Egg, an Iowa farm that recalled 380 million eggs this week. An FDA spokeswoman, however, said the two recalls are related.

WASHINGTON — Salmonella has been found at an Ohio egg farm that received financing from the owner of the Iowa egg farm behind a massive recall earlier this year. Cal-Maine Foods Inc., the nation’s biggest egg seller and distributor, said it is recalling 288,000 eggs the company had purchased from supplier Ohio Fresh Eggs after a test showed salmonella at the Ohio farm. No illnesses have been reported. According to Cal-Maine Foods, the eggs from Ohio Fresh were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma,...

NEW YORK — Two New York State legislators want to require farmers in the state to vaccinate their chickens against salmonella. State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh announced their proposal yesterday in front of a Lower East Side supermarket. Their idea comes after a nationwide recall of more than a half-billion eggs. The legislators say that vaccinations costing one penny per dozen eggs could nearly eliminate the more than 100,000 salmonella cases each year in the United States if all states had such a law. They plan to...

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration is planning to inspect all of the country’s largest egg farms before the end of next year following the massive recall that has sickened as many as 1,500 people. An Obama administration official says inspectors will visit about 600 large egg farms that produce 80 percent of the nation’s eggs. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not yet been announced. This will be the first government effort to inspect large egg farms, as most of them have gone largely uninspected for decades.

WASHINGTON — Farms like the two involved in a massive recall of more than a half-billion eggs are rarely inspected by the federal government, officials say, as the Food and Drug Administration has traditionally reacted to outbreaks instead of working to prevent them. Margaret Hamburg, Food and Drug Administration chief, said yesterday her agency has not had enough authority to help prevent outbreaks like the more than 1,000 cases of salmonella poisoning linked to the eggs from two Iowa farms.
