ESSEX — When crew members from the venerable PBS series "This Old House" began clearing brush around their next project house a few weeks ago, homeowner John Corcoran put on a hard hat, picked up a chain saw, and worked alongside them. "Part of the reason we moved to Essex was it's a small town, rural, with lots of trees," Corcoran said. "Chain saw therapy, I call it. " The hillside cottage isn't his residence, however. In May, Mullins, anchor of PRI's "The World," will receive a Gracie Award, which honors women in broadcasting, in the category outstanding anchor - news or news magazine. This comes six months after the station reduced her hours by 75 percent for budgetary reasons, she says. Now she's on the air one week a month instead of weekly. Marco Werman, who previously shared the job equally with her, anchors the other three weeks.

It's within your reach, as long as you can write dreary scenes like these, from the PBS hit show "Downton Abbey": BATES, the basset hound of British valets, to his on-again, off-again girlfriend: "I don't know if I've dreaded this moment or longed for it. " The possibly virginal ANNA: "Well, either way, it's happened. " Wait, it gets worse. ANNA: "If you want me to throw up everything and come - yes, I will, gladly.

Feet clad in neon-green Converse sneakers shifted back and forth. Fingers twirled long strands of brown hair. Hands jingled change in pockets. There was some pacing; a lot of chattering; last-minute quizzing on current events. Finally, they were summoned - cue the bright lights, the cameras, the announcer, the cheering crowd.
