Police in Virginia say Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence after he refused a breath test. Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck says the NFL player was pulled over shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 66 outside of Washington and failed a sobriety test after refusing a breath test. Sternbeck says the 28-year-old was arrested and taken to a county detention center before being released later Thursday.

An arbitrator upheld the NFL's salary cap reductions on the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins for this season and next. Stephen Burbank ruled Tuesday in favor of the league and dismissed the grievances by both teams. The Redskins lost $36 million over two years. The Cowboys lost $10 million for overloading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season despite league warnings about such maneuvering. The Cowboys and Redskins, who filed their grievances against the league and players' association, said in a joint statement they would "abide by the arbitrator's decision to dismiss.

CANTON, Ohio -- Joe Gibbs came back for this? While his Washington Redskins beat the Denver Broncos, 20-17, on a last-second 39-yard field goal by Ola Kimrin last night in the Hall of Fame game, the Hall of Fame coach saw enough mistakes to fill an entire preseason. And then some. Still, the Redskins marched efficiently to the winning kick behind third-string quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, offsetting a long night of general inefficiency. The Broncos were even worse for most of the game.

IRVING, Texas -- As much as the Washington Redskins would have settled for any kind of victory over the Dallas Cowboys, this one was especially sweet. Mark Brunell hit Santana Moss in stride for touchdown passes of 39 and 70 yards in the final 3:46, then the defense made it stand up, giving Washington a 14-13 victory last night. The Redskins had lost 14 of the last 15 meetings, and they won at Texas Stadium for the first time since 1995. The comeback was stunning because Washington hadn't crossed the Dallas 27-yard line until Moss's first touchdown, which also was the first of the season...

LANDOVER, Md. — Michael Vick, not Donovan McNabb, played like a $78 million quarterback, accounting for six touchdowns all by himself. And his Philadelphia Eagles marched down the field in one big chunk after another, doing it enough times to put new entries in the various record books. On a day the Washington Redskins hoped to celebrate McNabb’s new five-year contract extension (with $40 million guaranteed) and set aside the swirl of distractions from his benching two weeks earlier, Vick and the Eagles stormed the party and thoroughly embarrassed their NFC East rivals, 59-28,...

LANDOVER, Md. - Todd Collins kept waiting for another chance to play in the NFL. And waiting . . . and waiting . . . and waiting. Forget about the five years without throwing for a touchdown. How about the three years without so much as attempting a pass? The veteran from Walpole, Mass., finally was called upon last night by the weary Washington Redskins, and Collins performed brilliantly. Replacing injured starter Jason Campbell, Collins tossed two TDs to lead Washington over the fading Chicago Bears, 24-16, ending the Redskins' four-game losing streak.

PHILADELPHIA — Donovan McNabb is changing uniforms and staying in the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles traded McNabb to the Washington Redskins for a pair of draft picks last night. The Eagles will receive a second-round pick (37th overall) in this month’s NFL draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year. “Donovan McNabb was more than a franchise quarterback for this team,’’ Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie said. “I look forward to honoring him as one of the greatest Eagles of all time and hopefully see him enshrined in the Pro Football...

LANDOVER, Md. -- Bill Parcells celebrated the touchdown with a big smile and his fist thrust high in the air. The Dallas Cowboys coach had turned the trick that put his old nemesis on the ropes. Richie Anderson's halfback option pass floated into the hands of former Patriot Terry Glenn in the back of the end zone early in the fourth quarter, and the Cowboys sacked Mark Brunell five times in last night's 21-18 victory over Joe Gibbs and the Washington Redskins. In the first meeting in 14 years between two of the NFL's top coaches, Parcells showed he still has Gibbs's number.

Donovan McNabb to second string. Then to third string. Then no guarantee that he’ll be back next season. Maybe he’s no John Elway after all. The ever-dramatic Washington Redskins upset the NFL apple cart once again yesterday when coach Mike Shanahan announced Rex Grossman as his starter for the rest of the season, beginning with tomorrow’s game at Dallas. McNabb will be the No. 2 quarterback against the Cowboys, then drop to No. 3 behind Grossman and John Beck for the final two games of the season.

PHILADELPHIA — That hardly looked like Donovan McNabb taking snaps at the Linc, and it had nothing to do with his burgundy-and-gold jersey. McNabb threw for 125 yards and one touchdown, leading the Washington Redskins to a 17-12 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday in his first game against his former team. Michael Vick was forced out in the first quarter with chest and rib injuries in his first start in front of the hometown crowd. Kevin Kolb, who was supposed to be McNabb’s successor all along, replaced Vick after losing his starting job because...

LANDOVER, Md. - Playing for their playoff lives, Eli Manning and the New York Giants were efficient, focused, and dominant. Playing for their new general manager, the Washington Redskins did a good job of convincing the boss that maybe everyone ought to be fired. The Giants kept themselves in the postseason hunt last night with one of the most lopsided victories in the long, storied series against their NFC East rival. New York scored on six of its first seven possessions and controlled every facet of the game in a 45-12 win that wasn’t as close as even that...

LANDOVER, Md. - Sherm Lewis might want to go back to bingo. Or, better yet, he might want to apply for a job as the Philadelphia Eagles’ play caller - it’s a much easier job with someone such as DeSean Jackson on your side. Jackson scored on a 67-yard reverse and caught a 57-yard touchdown pass in the first half, and the Eagles converted three turnovers into points last night in a 27-17 win over the Washington Redskins. Nearly all the scoring came in the first half of an injury-filled game - Philadelphia’s Brian Westbrook (concussion)

LANDOVER, Md. - In the final 30 seconds, the Arizona Cardinals used three quarterbacks, scored a touchdown, failed on a 2-point conversion, recovered an onside kick, and barely - just barely - missed a 55-yard field goal. It was only after Neil Rackers's kick sailed wide left that the Washington Redskins could take a deep sigh, digest all that happened, and realize that, despite their effort, they had not quite found a new way to blow a ballgame. The Redskins beat the Cardinals, 21-19, yesterday on an afternoon that degenerated into a series of unfortunate events.

LANDOVER, Md. - The New York Giants have shoved every distraction aside, including a shooting incident involving their star receiver, to become as dominant as, say, a Chicago Bulls team with Michael Jordan. Perhaps that's no coincidence. At one of the first meetings of training camp, coach Tom Coughlin discussed the 1991-92 Bulls as a team for the Giants to emulate in its bid to repeat as Super Bowl champions. That was the first season that Jordan and the Bulls won back-to-back titles, and the Giants remained solidly on pace to keep up with His Airness after...

PHILADELPHIA - If there was any doubt the New York Giants rule the NFC East, the Super Bowl champions erased it last night. Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes, Brandon Jacobs had two TD runs, and the Giants held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 36-31, and distance themselves from the pack in the NFL's toughest division. The Eagles had the ball at their 45 with 1:55 left, but Brian Westbrook was stopped by Chase Blackburn on fourth and 1. "It was exhilarating," Blackburn said of the clinching tackle.
