Those who knew and loved Junior Seau say they didn't see this coming. "This is not anything I thought he would ever do," former San Diego Chargers safety Miles McPherson said. Like many of Seau's friends, McPherson was still trying to comprehend the death of the former star NFL linebacker the day after his body was found inside his home in suburban Oceanside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The San Diego County medical examiner ruled the death a suicide on Thursday.

The program is being put together by psychologist Micheline Hagan, who was hired in September following a school year in which three USM students died, including one which was ruled a suicide. Hagan says a student contemplating suicide is more likely to talk to a friend about the problem than set up an appointment with a school counselor. New Hampshire and Massachusetts share a common border, but differences between the states' laws are so vast that Granite State motorists must be put on alert before crossing over into the Bay State. That, at least, is the argument of six New Hampshire legislators who want the state to erect signs along every unmarked road leading to the border with the following caution: "Warning: Massachusetts Border 500 Feet. " That's just a concise way of saying, "Buckle up, put your helmet on, and throw out your fireworks, firearms, and knives.

Family members said today they had different opinions on whether a small boy should have been returned to the Salem mother who allegedly slashed his and his sister's throats on Sunday. Wayne Cox, 62, cousin of Tanicia Goodwin, 25, had custody of her son, Jamaal, from 2007 to 2010. It was a mistake, he said, to return the boy to his mother's care. She had a history of violent behavior, he said, and did not have the skills necessary to be a good parent. "If you paid attention, all the warning signs were there since she was a teenager," Cox said Cox said he...

WASHINGTON — The government-appointed panel investigating the roots of the financial crisis says the meltdown occurred because government officials and Wall Street executives ignored warning signs and failed to manage risks. The crisis could have been avoided, the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission determined in a final report released yesterday that was only supported by Democrats on the panel. Instead the country fell into the deepest recession since the 1930s and millions of people lost their jobs, the congressionally appointed panel concluded.

WASHINGTON - Unprecedented drug shortages are threatening the lives of cancer patients and other seriously ill people, and the Obama administration's plan to tackle them is but a small step toward solving a complex problem. President Obama ordered the Food and Drug Administration yesterday to take new steps to send out early warnings about looming shortages and try to avert them. "Even though the FDA has successfully prevented an actual crisis, this is one of those slow-rolling problems that could end up resulting in disaster for patients and health care facilities all over the country," Obama...
