When she organized last fall's "On the Edge" juried exhibition at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, artistic director Kris Waldman hoped to generate more diversity in the gallery's offerings. A new itinerary on the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism Development's website showcases art in galleries and coffee shops in the southwestern part of the state. The Monadnock Visual Arts Tour highlights "off the beaten path" places to see art, such as the Dahlgren Fine Art Studio/Gallery in Temple and the Studios at Crescent Pond in Stoddard, in addition to galleries at Keene State College, the Jaffrey Civic Center and other locations. The site also mentions upcoming events such as the Children and the Arts Festival in Peterborough and the Art Walk in Keene.

The Massachusetts Cultural Council is inviting parents to an arts advocacy workshop from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the LynnArts building, 25 Exchange St. The session will help residents more effectively promote arts education in their schools as a way of preparing students for college and the workplace. Focus will include visual arts, dance, music, theater, and media arts. The workshop is one of a series in different locations the council is holding. Free child care for children 3 and older.

By Justin A. Rice, Town Correspondent The fourth Massachusetts Poetry Festival will be held in Salem April  20—22. The three-day event will bring 1,500 poets and poetry lovers to the city, according to Mayor Kim Driscoll's newsletter, and will showcase a variety of extraordinary local and regional poets. The event will feature poetry readings, interactive workshops, panel discussions,music, film and visual arts, and performances geared toward a diverse statewide audience.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship handed out by the Franklin Art Association is Thursday. The association will provide a $1,000 scholarship to a qualifying high school senior living or attending school in Franklin who plans to attend an accredited school of higher learning and major in visual arts. MANCHESTER, N.H. - "A New Vision: Modernist Photography," which runs at the Currier Museum of Art through May 13, is three shows. It's a gapped history of 20th-century photography (the first photograph here, actually, is from 1880). It's a somewhat wayward survey of the modernist aesthetic in photography - wayward as any show consisting of nearly 150 photographs by more than 60 photographers not only has to be but ought to be. And "A New Vision" is a well-deserved celebration of the Currier's photography holdings.

Organizers of the Salem Arts Festival are recruiting artists of all mediums to exhibit and perform in this year's festival, scheduled for June 1-3. Now in its fourth season, the festival is a local celebration of the arts, including painting, photography, sculpture, dance, music, writing, film, new media, theater, poetry, and culinary arts. The event, held at various venues in the city, is designed to promote arts in the downtown by giving local artists a chance to display and present their work.

Local residents can get into the spirit of New Orleans next Saturday when Arts After Hours presents its second annual Bourbon Street event from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Lynn Arts building, 25 Exchange St. The event is designed to bring the traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration to Lynn. This year it will feature live music from Elephant Wrecking Ball, a band with members from the Berklee College of Music that is known for its brassy New Orleans-style sound and special trombone effects.

The town's Concord Cultural Council is accepting applications for its next round of grants, with the deadline Oct. 15. The council has received $4,000 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council that it will distribute to support local projects.
