LOS ANGELES — On her new VH1 reality dating show, Rozonda Thomas — better known as Chilli from the groundbreaking hip-hop group TLC — doesn’t lounge in bubble baths or hand out fake bling to her suitors. Instead, the 39-year-old singer and mother meets bachelors at black-tie affairs and confers with a dating expert, as well as her 12-year-old son. The cable network synonymous with “Flavor of Love’’ and its sleazy spinoffs is trading trampiness for fabulousness with a new slate of series starring seemingly well-adjusted rich and famous black Americans.

The only problem is that it was 1958, they lived in Virginia, and he was white and she was part-black, part-Cherokee, and interracial marriage was illegal. They traveled to Washington, D.C., to wed. Sometimes we use irony to cover up the pain. It's a form of po-mo stoicism, using bitter and self-referential humor to mask tragedy. By undermining all human feeling, and seeming to take nothing seriously, as Dave Eggers did in "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," the ironist can actually create quite a genuine effect. Other times, irony is just a way to display just how clever you are, or how generational you can be. And VH1's new comedy, "I Hate My 30's," falls squarely into that second category of irony.

Packed with lavish wigs and heady intrigue, "The Last King" tells a juicy story, revealing that the 17th-century British royals were every bit as tempestuous and naughty as their modern counterparts. The story of King Charles II (Rufus Sewell) supplies a vivid history lesson filled with conspiracies, sexual shenanigans, and Protestant-Catholic conflicts. Whatever the movie lacks in clarity, it makes up for as an enticement to open the history books and learn more...
