A celebration for local veterans that will include tributes from local and state politicians, a luncheon buffet, and singers is planned for noon to 4 p.m. next Saturday at the Cushing Center. Veterans Appreciation Day, cosponsored by the Norwell American Legion and the Norwell Men's Club, will honor residents of Norwell, Hanover, and Scituate for their military service. There is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted at the door, according to organizers. - Meg Murphy

In a quiet park on the eastern edge of this auto manufacturing town, a gleaming ring of black granite walls and monuments stand in solemn tribute to the war dead. Hundreds of names are etched in stone, many of them long forgotten to history. Not so the six newest additions: Brian M. Clemens. Robert L. McKinley. James E. Swain. Rickey E. Jones. Nathan J. Frigo. David N. Simmons. Their smiles, their voices, their Little League games, their yearbook photos are fresh memories here to friends and family.

WHEN YOU hear people calling candidates like Ron Paul isolationists, as Nicholas Burns did in his op-ed "America's new isolationism," which was published on Veterans Day, it is important to remember who the "internationalists" are. These are the folks who gave us nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan and wasted the lives of thousands of our soldiers in the process. They are also the ones who created the problems associated with illegal immigration with their insistence on open borders and ports of entry.

Treasury prices edged up Monday as worries over Europe continue to hang over markets. The euro fell against the dollar and European and U.S. stock indexes sank as traders looked ahead to the challenges still facing Europe. The Italian government raised $4.1 billion in a sale of five-year bonds, but it had to borrow at the highest interest rate since 1997. In late Monday afternoon trading, the price of the 10-year note was up 15.6 cents for every $100 invested. The yield fell to 2.04 percent, a drop from 2.06 percent late Thursday.

11-11-11 was a huge day for weddings, especially at the Westin Copley Place. It was there that Force Technical Sergeant Andrew Limes and his fiance, Lauren Joyce , celebrated the all-expenses-paid wedding package on Veterans Day that they won from a long list of businesses, including the Westin, Fox 25, Arthur Murray, Russo's Tux Shop & Limousine, All About Flowers for Weddings, and Westin St. John and Delta, which provided the honeymoon....

MELROSE - A year ago, Kathleen McGourthy, a Melrose mother of four, was driving to the Lincoln School for a Veterans Day ceremony. Recognizing an elderly man in full military uniform jogging toward the school as former mayor Jim Milano, she pulled over and offered a ride.
