Valtteri Filppula and Jiri Hudler both had a goal and assist, and the Detroit Red Wings scored five times in the first period of their 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night. Todd Bertuzzi, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren Helm also scored for Detroit, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg had two assists each, and Jimmy Howard made 30 saves. The Red Wings scored on their first two shots of the game. Datsyuk left in the second period because of an undisclosed lower body injury and didn't return.

Just like that, the Detroit Red Wings have a losing streak at home. After winning 23 straight at Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings have now lost two in a row on home ice, falling 4-3 to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Red Wings hadn't been beaten in regulation in Detroit since Nov. 3. Their winning streak was snapped Thursday night with a shootout loss to Vancouver. Gabriel Landeskog had two goals, and Steve Downie added a goal and two assists for the Avalanche, who handed the Red Wings their third consecutive loss overall.

Ryan Smyth scored the only goal of the shootout, giving the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 victory last night that snapped the Red Wings' 13-game home winning streak. Smyth, Raffi Torres, and Marty Reasoner had goals for Edmonton in regulation and Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots. Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom, and Valtteri Filppula scored for the Red Wings, whose winning streak ended one short of tying a franchise record set in 1965. Nicklas Lidstrom and Mathieu Schneider had two assists apiece, and Dominik Hasek made 23 saves.

Jimmy Howard made 27 saves, and the Detroit Red Wings stretched their winning streak to seven with a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Jakub Kindl, Johan Franzen, and Valtteri Filppula scored first-period goals for Detroit (16-7-1), which last won seven in a row in March 2010. Pavel Datsyuk pushed the lead to 4-1 by scoring into an empty net with 1:17 left. Howard, making his 17th straight start, was steady throughout. In the second period he robbed Jason Pominville, who was left alone in the slot.

The Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to make a strong impression for new interim general manager Cliff Fletcher. Mats Sundin scored with 29.2 seconds left to give host Toronto a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals last night, a day after Fletcher replaced the fired John Ferguson. "It was good to get a win in his first game," said goalie Vesa Toskala, who made 30 saves. "It was a huge 2 points for us. " Chad Kilger and Alex Steen also scored for Toronto, which won for the fourth time in five games.
