Even Vezina Trophy winners can look human when staring down Steven Stamkos. In the first period, Stamkos foiled Tim Thomas with what the goalie termed a perfect shot - a wrister from the right circle that slipped through the puckstopper. In the third, during a power play, Stamkos set up at his preferred work station: the left circle. With the help of a Dennis Seidenberg screen, Stamkos hammered home a one-timer so fast that it would have needed clearance from air traffic control at Logan Airport.

Had events taken place as he and his colleagues expected, Bruins president Cam Neely would be in the thick of the second round of the playoffs right now. "I felt, like everybody, we could have gotten through this series," Neely said Thursday during a press conference with Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs and principal Charlie Jacobs at TD Garden. "I don't think we played our best games at all in the games that we lost. "Even in the games we won, I don't think we played our best hockey.

The Bruins’ championship run is the first for rookie forward Tyler Seguin, and also the first for the Vapor APX, the newest skate made by Bauer Hockey of New Hampshire. The $800 skate hit the market in April, and Seguin is the only Bruin to wear a pair. A top draft pick who had an inconsistent season, Seguin became the star in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning when the 19-year-old scored two critical goals. “Obviously other players have other favorites, but they’re my favorite, and they didn’t hurt me in Game 2 that’s for...

It was not lost on Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli that some of Washington's key players in Game 7 - Joel Ward, Mike Knuble, and Matt Hendricks - are some of their biggest and toughest blue-collar boys. Such is the template Chiarelli has always had in mind when assembling his Black-and-Gold rosters. "You saw Washington's third and fourth lines," Chiarelli said during Friday's breakup day at TD Garden. "Those are some big, heavier guys. The Wards, the Hendrickses, the [Troy]

By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff With Nathan Horton out for the rest of the Stanley Cup Final, Tyler Seguin will be back in tonight's lineup. Seguin was a healthy scratch in Game 3. The move worked perfectly, as Shawn Thornton came in and gave the fourth line some much-needed even-strength identity. "I wasn't happy with the way I played last game in Vancouver," Seguin said. "I don't think I played at my best. I can't say I saw it coming. I can't say I was shocked. It was what it was. " Claude Julien didn't offer any insight on how he will manage the first line.

You don't have to be among the most devout of the Spoked-Believers to instantly identify the Bruins' top line these days. It's simple. Whichever line Tyler Seguin is skating on is the Bruins' first line of offense. If he's skating with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, then that speed-to-thrill trio gets the No. 1 designation. If he's dashing down right wing with Milan Lucic and David Krejci, like he has been for the last five games, then the label makes a line change. Just add Seguin and skate, instant offense.

SAN JOSE - Tyler Seguin is still young, far from a complete player at age 20, his career ceiling still unknown. He was a center by trade and upbringing before he was drafted by the Bruins, but he has been almost exclusively a winger in his two NHL seasons. It could be that he remains out there along the wall for years to come. "There is so much more to this player," said coach Claude Julien before his squad's game Thursday night against the Sharks. "And he's going to be even better down the road.

For two games of the Bruins-Capitals series, there hasn't been a player on either team who's eluded a check. Such black-and-blue play has not been suited to Bruin Tyler Seguin's offensive game. As a rookie, Seguin's flickering battle level cost him playoff games. He was a healthy scratch for 12 postseason matches. As a second-year pro, Seguin has shown far more courage than he did as a rookie. But in the first round, Seguin has played like he's been hearing footsteps. His performance in all three zones has suffered as a result.

BEDFORD - Tyler Seguin was concerned with the Bruins' quality rather than quantity as the team prepared for a two-game road trip yesterday. "We're not going into too much detail about actual wins and losses," Seguin said before boarding a flight from Hanscom Field for tonight's game against Phoenix. "We look at the way we played. We lost games we thought we played well in. "The major part of the last two months, we played strong games, and that's what we're reflecting on, playing strong games and playing solid, 60-minute games.

Tyler Seguin has been scratched for tonight's game. Seguin missed a team breakfast and team meeting this morning. "Honest mistake," said GM Peter Chiarelli. "But we have team rules. He has to abide by them. " Chiarelli said Seguin has had several such incidents during his career. "I don't see it as a problem," Chiarelli said. "I see it as a young player who sometimes forgets to set his alarm. " @GlobeFluto

The no-movement clause in Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas's contract will expire on July 1. The same day, backup Tuukka Rask will become a restricted free agent. The Bruins could move Thomas and allocate part of his $5 million annual cap hit toward Rask's next contract. General manager Peter Chiarelli, however, downplayed any possibility of trading Thomas. "I know I've seen speculation about moving a goalie and all that stuff," Chiarelli said. "Certainly, I'm not inclined to do that.

In short order, Bruins forward Tyler Seguin will likely undergo surgery on his left hand. On March 15, in the first period of the 6-2 loss to the Panthers, Seguin suffered a detached tendon. Upon suffering the injury, team doctors informed Seguin that he couldn't do further damage to the hand by playing. They told him, however, that it would be painful to continue. Naturally, Seguin played. "If you can bear the pain, bear the pain," Seguin, with a smile, recalled being told.

Tim Thomas had every reason to be confident heading into overtime of Game 7 in Boston's first-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals. After all, the Bruins won three seventh games in last year's run to the Stanley Cup title. "I'm probably in shock," Thomas said Wednesday night after Joel Ward beat him at 2:57 of overtime to lead the Capitals to a 2-1 victory over Boston and give Washington a spot in the Eastern Conference semifinals. "I really believed that we were going to win. "I really had a deep feeling that this wasn't the end of the road for...

Their most recent Game 7 serves as a reminder of how everybody plays a role when great things happen in the playoffs. On June 15, 2010, three of Boston's four lines showed up legless at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The Canucks were roaring from the opening puck drop. The only Bruins that offered initial resistance were the hard hats: Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton.

The All-Star Game player draft is over. After taking Pavel Datsyuk with his first pick, Zdeno Chara drafted Tim Thomas. With his second-to-last pick, Chara tabbed Tyler Seguin. The two hugged after Chara announced Seguin's name. "Definitely getting hot back there," Seguin said with a smile of the wait. "I don't know if it was the lights. Little nervous. All four of us were when we were on the stage. Not embarrassed, because everybody was having a good time. " The All-Star Game is Sunday at 4 p.m. at Scotiabank Place.

By Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff Less than 48 hours after Tyler Seguin was yanked from the Boston lineup for oversleeping, neither he nor head coach Claude Julien were inclined to discuss the subject this morning following the club's tradtional day-of-game skate. Seguin was available at his locker as the doors to the dressing room opened at approximately 11 a.m., but the 19-year-old winger had the club's top media operative, Matt Chmura, at his side to shoo away questions about Winnipeg.
