MINNEAPOLIS -- Bronson Arroyo's intentions? Good. His logic? Misguided. His execution? Well, that conjured memories of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach John McKay, who, upon being asked after one particularly unsettling defeat what he thought of his team's execution, responded, "I'm in favor of it. " The situation last night: Bottom of the first inning, bases loaded with Twins, one out, lefthanded slugger Justin Morneau at the plate. Morneau chopped Arroyo's initial offering just right of the mound, where Arroyo easily gloved it. There was a force play at home, but Arroyo pivoted and threw toward second in an attempt to...

ARLINGTON, Texas — Cliff Lee insists there’s no reason to panic despite his recent struggles. Lee gave up five runs in five innings and was outpitched by Minnesota’s Francisco Liriano as the Twins beat the Texas Rangers, 6-4, last night to avoid a four-game sweep. “I haven’t been locating pitches as well as I expect myself to and they haven’t missed them,’’ Lee said. “It’s just been a handful of pitches and they happened to capitalize on them. I’ve got to do a better job of staying out of the heart of the plate.

CLEVELAND — Fausto Carmona pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in more than two years, slowing Minnesota’s surge this month and leading the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 win over the AL Central-leading Twins last night. Carmona (12-14) had lost his last six decisions, falling 1-0 in a complete-game start against Seattle his last time out. The righthander dominated the Twins, who just completed an 8-1 homestand and lost for only the second time in nine games in September.

They'd lost seven of eight games to the Twins here since that Saturday afternoon when Theo Epstein bloodlessly dealt one of New England's favorite sons,...

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- A pair of twins who tried to dupe a judge in a larceny case have doubled the trouble they face. Yamahile Ortiz pleaded guilty to using a stolen credit card and was sentenced by New Britain Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Clifford to probation. Soon after, the public defender came before Clifford with Yamahile, 18, and her twin sister, Yaricza. Yamahile Ortiz had a simple explanation why her sister stood in for her at a hearing. "I had a final today," she said.
