You wonder if Tracy McGrady sits around with his Hawks teammates and reminisces, "Remember when I …?" or "Did you know I used to …?" McGrady has years of memories to reflect on. He was once one of the game's premier scorers, a 6-foot-8-inch wunderkind who could draw defenders on the perimeter for long-range shots, or use his girth and length to post up small forwards who dared to defend him or spin around for a high-flying dunk. Nine years ago, playing for the Magic, a 22-year-old T-Mac led the NBA in scoring with 32.1 points per game.

Yao Ming added 20 points, and Bob Sura had 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. David Wesley scored 18, and Juwan Howard 13. After sounding more positive about his injured left knee on Thursday, Josh Smith got to test it out at Friday morning's shootaround at Suffolk University. And the results weren't good. Therefore, the Hawks were without Smith for Game 3 against the Celtics at TD Garden. Smith did say that if his knee improves the way it did between Games 2 and 3, there's a chance he could play Sunday in Game 4. "I felt pretty good until I started exploding up to the basket," Smith said. "That's where the pain really starts to generate, when I become explosive with it. Celtics center Jermaine O'Neal has had indications for years that his basketball career was coming to a close. His body has been betraying him, especially after he refused surgery for a torn meniscus and continued to play while with the Pacers. O'Neal is angry about the perception that he has succumbed to minor injuries, and he says his left wrist condition could mean the end of his career at age 33. One thing O'Neal's situation should teach us is that even if you enter the draft at a very young age, it doesn't mean you will play an extra long...

Daryl Morey is spending his weekend in Boston as one of the organizers of the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, which spends two days discussing sports analytics. It may sound confusing, but the intensive study of basketball statistics beyond points, rebounds, and assists has made Morey one of the NBA's most innovative general managers. Morey, whose side job is running the Houston Rockets, has used his background and fascination with statistics to become sort of the Billy Beane of basketball.
