Mikhail Grabovski scored twice in the third period and Toronto gave Randy Carlyle a victory in his first game behind the Maple Leafs' bench, beating the Canadiens, 3-1, last night in Montreal. The Maple Leafs fired Ron Wilson Friday night and hired Carlyle, the former Toronto defenseman who was fired by Anaheim in December. "I was a little nervous, a little butterflies, but I didn't make too many mistakes, I thought," Carlyle said. "It's different when you haven't been behind a bench for three months and it's a new team, but we got through it. The assistants did a great job. " ...

Evgeni Malkin tied it with 6 seconds left in regulation and then scored the lone shootout goal to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 victory over Toronto on Tuesday night. Malkin's 27th goal capped a furious third-period rally by the Penguins, who trailed by three with 13 minutes to play. The NHL's leading scorer later flipped a wrist shot past Jonas Gustavsson in the second round of the shootout to extend Pittsburgh's winning streak to eight games. The Maple Leafs appeared to be in complete control after Tyler Bozak and Clarke MacArthur scored 19 seconds apart in the third...

Right-hander Justin Germano has been down this road before. It's a bumpy one and no one can ever be sure where it ends. Germano, who's played parts of six seasons in the majors, is in training camp this year with the Boston Red Sox as a non-roster invitee. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run single that put Toronto ahead 3-1 in the third, but shortstop Omar Vizquel's...

The Toronto Blue Jays have assembled a team with the potential to become a division champion this year — just about anywhere else except in the American League East. Barring a serious slide by Boston, the New York Yankees or Tampa Bay, the Blue Jays seem destined to spend this September as they have the previous four, looking up at them from fourth place in arguably the toughest division in the league. "We don't set out in November, December or any month in the offseason to think about finishing fourth," manager John Farrell told fans at Rogers Centre before...

NEW YORK - His memory had dimmed, and glaucoma had robbed him of sight. At 92, Herb Carnegie was living in an assisted-care home in northern Toronto. But Carnegie, who many say should have been the Jackie Robinson of the NHL, laughed with delight when he reminisced about his youthful hockey experiences. "We learned to skate on the frozen ponds right outside the front door," he said. "When I was 7, my sister Bernice said, ‘Hey, Herb, you can play!' Getting a compliment like that, at that age?
