For decades, those with high cholesterol have been given a list of don'ts when it comes to their diet: Don't eat cholesterol-rich eggs; don't eat butter; don't eat red meat or regular ice cream. Well, now researchers have identified a list of do's for the diet that may work to lower cholesterol levels better than avoiding those don'ts. In a study published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that eating cholesterol-lowering foods like nuts, soy protein, and certain fiber-rich items result in bigger drops in "bad" LDL cholesterol than avoiding...

Ricky Romero has no answers for his control problems. Romero walked a career-high seven in six-plus innings for Toronto, and B.J. Upton hit an RBI double in the 11th that sent the Tampa Bay Rays over the Blue Jays 5-4 on Wednesday. Romero gave up four runs and two hits. The left-hander, who also hit a batter, has walked 21 over his last four starts. "I can't explain it," Romero said. "It's frustrating. I've just got to keep working. This game takes a lot out of you mentally, more than physically.

As expected, Tuukka Rask will not be available against Toronto on Tuesday. Rask was injured in the second period of Saturday's game against the Islanders. "He's banged up to the point where he's certainly not going to meet us on this road trip," said Claude Julien. GM Peter Chiarelli is expected to provide some information on Rask's status later today. * Julien said Daniel Paille is day-to-day because of an upper-body injury. "I think it's going to be hard to detect the length of his [absence]

Slumping Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer during a five-run fourth and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon moved Pena up from the middle of the lineup to the leadoff spot in an attempt to help him break out of an offensive funk. Pena, who snapped an 0 for 18 slide on his sixth homer of the season, entered Tuesday hitting just .116 in May. Pena's homer to center off Drew Hutchison (3-2) was estimated at 452 feet.

Mikhail Grabovski scored twice in the third period and Toronto gave Randy Carlyle a victory in his first game behind the Maple Leafs' bench, beating the Canadiens, 3-1, last night in Montreal. The Maple Leafs fired Ron Wilson Friday night and hired Carlyle, the former Toronto defenseman who was fired by Anaheim in December. "I was a little nervous, a little butterflies, but I didn't make too many mistakes, I thought," Carlyle said. "It's different when you haven't been behind a bench for three months and it's a new team, but we got through it. The assistants did a great job. " ...

Evgeni Malkin tied it with 6 seconds left in regulation and then scored the lone shootout goal to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 victory over Toronto on Tuesday night. Malkin's 27th goal capped a furious third-period rally by the Penguins, who trailed by three with 13 minutes to play. The NHL's leading scorer later flipped a wrist shot past Jonas Gustavsson in the second round of the shootout to extend Pittsburgh's winning streak to eight games. The Maple Leafs appeared to be in complete control after Tyler Bozak and Clarke MacArthur scored 19 seconds apart in the third...

Right-hander Justin Germano has been down this road before. It's a bumpy one and no one can ever be sure where it ends. Germano, who's played parts of six seasons in the majors, is in training camp this year with the Boston Red Sox as a non-roster invitee. He started and threw a pair of shutout innings Wednesday in a 3-all tie with Toronto. The game was halted after nine innings because the split-squad Blue Jays were short on players. Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run single that put Toronto ahead 3-1 in the third, but shortstop Omar Vizquel's...

The Toronto Blue Jays have assembled a team with the potential to become a division champion this year — just about anywhere else except in the American League East. Barring a serious slide by Boston, the New York Yankees or Tampa Bay, the Blue Jays seem destined to spend this September as they have the previous four, looking up at them from fourth place in arguably the toughest division in the league. "We don't set out in November, December or any month in the offseason to think about finishing fourth," manager John Farrell told fans at Rogers Centre before...

NEW YORK - His memory had dimmed, and glaucoma had robbed him of sight. At 92, Herb Carnegie was living in an assisted-care home in northern Toronto. But Carnegie, who many say should have been the Jackie Robinson of the NHL, laughed with delight when he reminisced about his youthful hockey experiences. "We learned to skate on the frozen ponds right outside the front door," he said. "When I was 7, my sister Bernice said, ‘Hey, Herb, you can play!' Getting a compliment like that, at that age?

The momentum that Brian Matusz and the Baltimore Orioles gained during a wildly successful road trip vanished in rapid fashion against the two-time defending AL champion Texas Rangers. Matusz yielded seven runs in five innings, and Baltimore's five-game winning streak ended unceremoniously with a 14-3 defeat Monday night. Coming off a run of 14 straight losing seasons, the Orioles got off to an outstanding start this year and owned the best record in the majors after going 5-1 on a journey through Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park.

In 1966, you could smoke in the city's elevators, but men had to doff their hats. In the early 19th century, when Canada was very much British, you could be hanged if caught singing the pro-United States protest song ‘‘Yankee Doodle Dandy. " Folk legends such as Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot got their musical start during the edgy bohemian days of the now super-trendy and expensive...

Toronto slugger Jose Bautista has only five home runs in 96 at-bats through his first 27 games. Albert Pujols is probably green with envy. Pujols' career-worst home run drought reached 33 games and 137 at-bats after he went 0 for 4 in the Los Angeles Angels' 4-0 loss to the Blue Jays on Friday night. His batting average dropped to .194 — a stunning start for the three-time NL MVP, who signed a 10-year, $240 million contract in December as a free agent. He has just five RBIs in 108 at-bats this season.

Yu Darvish acknowledged it felt strange to face the Blue Jays. That didn't stop him from shutting down their lineup. Darvish won his third straight start, Mitch Moreland and Craig Gentry homered and the Texas Rangers beat Toronto 4-1 on Monday night. Pitching against a Blue Jays team that reportedly pursued him when his rights went up for auction last December made Darvish (4-0) a little uneasy as he took the mound. "Honestly, it was kind of an awkward feeling because rumor has it that this was a team that might have posted for me and there was some chance...

While everyone was focused on Yu Darvish, Kyle Drabek turned in a top-notch performance. Too bad for the young Toronto right-hander that he still got hung with the loss. Darvish won his third straight start, Mitch Moreland and Craig Gentry homered and the Texas Rangers beat Drabek and the Blue Jays 4-1 Monday night. It was a hard-luck defeat for Drabek (2-2), his second straight. He gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, walked two and struck out a career-high eight, including five straight during one stretch.

TORONTO -- Ray Allen did not travel with the Celtics for Friday night's game at Toronto and will also miss Saturday's visit to New Jersey. But Allen could re-join the team for Sunday's game at Charlotte, coach Doc Rivers said before the team's shootaround at the Air Canada Centre. "It's not that serious, it's swelling," Rivers said of Allen's ankle injury. "I'm concerned when anybody's injured. It's not a serious injury, that's what the doctors keep saying, so that makes me feel better about it. "

TORONTO - Coach Doc Rivers took the blame for the Celtics' uneven performance in an 84-79 loss to the Raptors Friday night. "I told our guys I messed their rhythm up a little in the first half," Rivers said. "I told them I wasn't going to play [the starters] a lot of minutes, then try to make a charge in the second half. I don't think we handled that very well. "Again, you keep learning [about] your team. I thought we came out almost in a slow, cool mood, I thought I activated that.
