Tom Watson has aced the 178-yard sixth hole in the British Open, his 4-iron shot bouncing once on the green and dropping into the cup in the second round Friday. The 61-year-old Watson, a five-time British Open winner, threw both arms in the air, high-fived playing partner Henrik Stenson, shook hands with amateur Tom Lewis and took a bow for the cheering crowd. As he walked toward the green, Watson said: "Wish I could have seen it go in. " Dustin Johnson aced the 16th during the opening round, the first hole-in-one at the Open since 2009.

Like Freddie Couples, Tom Watson knows all about turning back the clock. He just couldn't do it again Friday at the Masters. Less than three years after thrilling old guys everywhere by making a run at his sixth British Open title at 59, Watson had a chance to hang around with the kids for the weekend at Augusta National. He wasn't in the lead like Couples, but was on the cutline with two holes to play. He bogeyed both 17 and 18 and finished at 7-over 151. The cut was 5 over, and the 63 players who made it were the most since 1992.

Four days after his heart-rending playoff defeat to Stewart Cink at Turnberry, Tom Watson shot a 3-under-par 67 yesterday to begin his pursuit of a fourth Senior British Open title at Sunningdale, England. The 59-year-old Watson, who almost became the oldest major champion at the British Open last weekend, was three shots behind leader Fred Funk. Funk birdied five of his last eight holes, including holing a bunker shot at No. 17, for a 6-under 64 - the lowest opening round in the history of the championship.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — Tom Watson put one hand on the Swilcan Bridge, bent over, and kissed the ancient stones. This was no tearful goodbye. Rather, a fond farewell. Watson played his last round in a British Open at St. Andrews yesterday, assured of missing the cut after shooting a 3-over-par 75. “St. Andrews, when I first played here, I didn’t like it,’’ he said. “But I learned to like it. And, eventually, to love it.’’ Several hundred fans stuck around in the fading light for one last glimpse of Watson on the Old Course, and he didn’t disappoint.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Allen Doyle figured he had maybe one friend among the thousands of people following him, Tom Watson, and Loren Roberts in the final round of the US Senior Open. "My wife was out there," deadpanned the Norwood, Mass., native. "I think the rest were all for Tom. " Nevertheless, Doyle shot a steady 2-under-par 68 yesterday to overcome Watson's two-shot lead and home state advantage to win the Open for the second year in a row. "I was in a no-lose position.

Tom Watson refuses to be a ceremonial player, especially when it comes to the British Open. He showed what he was talking about Friday when he quickly turned things around with a hole-in-one on the sixth hole. Watson drilled a 4-iron from about 160 yards into the wind, a shot that looked good from the time of that crisp click off his club. He never saw the ball bang against the pin and disappear, and he paused slightly even after hearing a sudden burst of cheering from fans perched atop the tall dunes surrounding the green.

Tom Watson had stood over putts like this pressure-packed 3-footer at the Senior PGA Championship for most of his adult life. Why dawdle? “I didn’t take much time with the putt,’’ he said with that famous toothy grin. “I took one practice stroke and figured, ‘Let’s get this over with.’’’ Watson summoned up some of his old major magic, holing the short birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat David Eger on Sunday. The 61-year-old Watson, down a shot with four holes left in regulation, became the oldest player to win a major since the senior...

Tom Watson's three-shot lead in the Senior British Open was in peril and memories of his back-nine collapse at the US Senior Open three weeks ago came flooding back. But that was in 90-degree heat at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. Yesterday, he was at cold and blustery Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland, where the five-time British Open winner and master of Scottish links courses is at home. Watson fired his tee shot into a fairway bunker at the last hole and took two to get out of the sand, but he survived a double bogey to win his third Senior British Open in five years.
