Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he'll be in charge of the cooking for his family's Thanksgiving dinner, being held for the first time at the official residence in Hartford. The freshman governor told reporters on Tuesday that he's planning to cook a "traditional" meal with a large turkey and a couple of turkey breasts. For the record, Malloy, an avid cook, does not brine his turkey to make sure it's juicy. Rather, he recommends cooking at a low temperature. Malloy said he's also planning to cook a big pot of meatballs and sausage to eat over the weekend, as well as two...

Food section contributor Debra Samuels, who is living in Tokyo, sent in this post. I'm exhausted just reading it.   TOKYO -- It is always a great challenge to make Thanksgiving dinner in a small Japanese kitchen, but the challenge is what makes this so much fun. Before I left the U.S. in October, I had mailed pie pans and spices to myself. Oh yeah, and we don't have a car. Couldn't mail that. So food shopping is a particularly interesting activity. You would be amazed at what you can carry on a bike, or drag with...

TRENTON, N.J. - Feel sleepy after the big Thanksgiving meal today? Contrary to popular thinking, it's not the turkey's fault. While there is an amino acid in turkey that induces sleepiness, specialists say it's much more likely that you're tired after having Thanksgiving dinner because you ate and drank too much and didn't sleep enough. So don't blame the turkey. "The poor turkeys have enough problems on Thanksgiving," said Dr. Carol Ash of Somerset Medical Center's Sleep for Life Center in Hillsborough, N.J. Turkey gets blamed for making...

There's something special about Thanksgiving in New England -- after all, that's where the tradition began (although some will argue the point). While most people will gather in the homes of family members, an increasingly sizable minority will spend the day in cozy inns and digging into a professionally prepared Thanksgiving dinner. Here are some New England lodging spots with packages that promise a memorable holiday: The Woodstock Inn in central Vermont considers Thanksgiving dinner just the start of things.

SAN SALVADOR -- It wasn't exactly traditional, but it got to the heart of the holiday. A group of 16 Americans and Salvadorans living in the United States flew to El Salvador to have Thanksgiving dinner yesterday with families who live at a trash dump. Like many others in Latin America, the scavengers survive by sorting through waste to find old tin cans, food, and other items they can sell or eat. Instead of the traditional US Thanksgiving turkey dinner, the scavenger families asked for a Salvadoran favorite: fried chicken from...

Cooks making their Thanksgiving shopping lists should be prepared: Turkey dinners are going to cost more this year as rising energy costs, bad weather, and growing demand drive food prices higher. This year, the cost of a basic Thanksgiving dinner for 10 - a 16-pound turkey with stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie, and basic trimmings - will jump 13 percent, to an average $49.20, according to a national survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, which represents farm and ranch families.

Today's question is an eternal one, with a seasonal twist:  I have a question related to responding to demeaning and/or racist comments in a group setting while a guest in someone else's home.  Occasionally, when I am at a dinner table with a group of people, such as at Thanksgiving dinner, someone will speak in a very derogatory manner with regard to people who are gay, disabled, or of a different ethnicity. When I do say something, no matter how gently phrased, an uncomfortable silence usually falls over the crowd and it takes quite a...
