By Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff Brandon Bass scored 18 points in the third quarter and 27 points for the game as the Celtics turned on the intensity after halftime and ran away from the Philadelphia 76ers, 101-85, in Game 5 at TD Garden. The Celtics trailed by four at halftime, but Bass's unlikely outburst was the catalyst for a third quarter that saw the Celtics shoot 61 percent and hold Philadelphia to 33 percent shooting. Bass was 6 for 7 in the third; Rajon Rondo assisted on 7 of Boston's 11 field goals in the period.

PHILADELPHIA - Would you have expected the Celtics to take any other route? The prosperity was just too much to take with an 18-point lead in the third quarter of Game 4 against the 76ers. The Celtics were playing too well, almost to the point where Celtics faithful expected a dramatic dropoff. Their fears came to fruition as the Celtics played perhaps one of their worst halves in three months, dusted by the suddenly energetic 76ers, 61-37, in the final two quarters. A 15-point halftime lead was wasted by early in the fourth quarter and the Celtics could do nothing to stop a young and confident team...

By Christopher L. Gasper, Globe columnist The Celtics' Eastern Conference semifinals series with the Philadelphia 76ers has been a series of lost opportunities. Now, it has the potential to be a series that is just lost. Reaching Game 7 for the Green has been like mindlessly following the siren song of a GPS to an unfamiliar address. You don't really grasp how you got there, but all that matters is that you arrived. So the Celtics are playing an elimination game tomorrow at TD Garden instead of taking their talents to South Beach for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals...

By Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff Sixers coach Doug Collins made it clear in his postgame news conference that he isn't content to just force a Game 7 in Boston. "I want more," said Collins. "I'm willing to get greedy. We want more. We've fought, we've worked hard, we've gone through a lot as a team. Our mindset is, I don't want to go into it with 'No matter what happens, we'll be OK' I want to win it. " Collins said he would tell his team to be confident and to go for broke in Game 7, which is Saturday night at TD Garden.

PHILADELPHIA - Celtics coach Doc Rivers is fond of calling the NBA a "make-miss league. " But the Celtics and 76ers turned it into a "miss-miss" playoff game Wednesday night, the Sixers heating up enough in the final quarter to take an 82-75 victory. The Celtics shot 33.3 percent from the field, somehow staying in contention until the final minutes, in setting up Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at TD Garden on Saturday. THEATER MEDEA Under the direction of David R. Gammons, Jennie Israel delivers a harrowing performance in a production of Euripides's tragedy that emphasizes not just the monstrousness of Medea's deeds, but also the universality of her plight in a world where men make (and remake) the rules to suit themselves. When Israel's Medea challenges the established order in an unthinkable act of murder, it is also an act, spiritually speaking, of self-slaughter. Through March 4. Presented by Actors' Shakespeare Project.

PHILADELPHIA - Thanks to Doc Rivers's greatest fear being realized and an offense that consistently bogged down - resulting in poor percentage shots to beat the shot clock - the Celtics have put themselves in a position they were desperately hoping to avoid. Having to win a decisive seventh game against the gutty Sixers at TD Garden Saturday. They know they have only themselves to blame following Wednesday night's 82-75 Game 6 loss. "We didn't have it," said Rivers simply, after Boston was done in by 17 turnovers, while shooting just 26 for 78 (33.3 percent)

PHILADELPHIA - Celtics guard Avery Bradley traveled with the team in preparation for Game 6, but his status for Wednesday night's contest has not been determined. Bradley, who has been dealing with a left shoulder injury, missed the Celtics' 101-85 win over the Sixers in Game 5 Monday night at TD Garden. Ray Allen regained his starting spot in place of Bradley. "He's an extraordinary defensive player," Allen said of Bradley, "but I just tried to stay in my lane and do what I'm capable of and be a part of the defensive unit.

In an NBA season shortened and condensed by a lockout, bench players have been more important than ever - even in the playoffs, when teams normally shorten their rotations. For the Sixers, and teams such as the Spurs and Pacers, success has come as much from the subs as from the starters. In the Sixers' Game 4 win Friday night, they got 44 points from their bench. The Celtics got 12 from their reserves. That wasn't the case in the Celtics' 101-85 win in Game 5, highlighting the importance of the bench for the Sixers.

Torey Krug is listed at 5 feet 9 inches, which is not ideal when going for his gear at his new workplace. "I don't know if they build these lockers for him," said Krug, referring to 6-9 teammate Zdeno Chara. "I can barely reach my helmet on top. " Had Krug been blessed with a touch more height, the young defenseman would have been a high-round draft pick. But the NHL's gatekeepers still lean on size, especially with defensemen, when building their rosters. So just as 30 teams bypassed Krug in the annual meat market because of his size, stature will become an issue once...

There was a high level of regret for Doc Rivers upon reflection. The Celtics coach knew he erred when he left Brandon Bass on the bench for nearly the entire fourth quarter of Game 4 against the 76ers Friday night, a Boston loss. Bass had been erratic offensively in the Eastern Conference semifinals, but he had exhibited a toughness all season the Celtics lacked in previous years in which they had disappointed in the playoffs. Bass is undersized, but he never has feared diving into the paint, rising for a two-handed dunk.
