Chinese cartoonist Carol Liu Hong built her studio from scratch, doing post-production work for TV commercials and then, once she broke even, realizing her dream of creating cartoons for Chinese kids. Breaking into a market dominated by state media companies has been tough — even more so now that Kungfu Panda creator DreamWorks Animation SKG and other big cartoon giants are launching their own local studios in China. Liu has gotten some help. Seeking to nurture creative industries, the Shanghai government gave her studio, Shanghai Cartoon Communication Group, a choice location.

NORWOOD - At 7:43 a.m. at Norwood High School, television production instructor Ann Kraus called out the warning. "Two minutes to go time," she said. "Everybody ready? Don't forget to talk to your camera people. " Around the bustling brown and royal blue studio, sophomores, juniors, and seniors were stationed behind professional television equipment. Three controlled the cameras, two sat behind the anchor desk, a half-dozen or so more joined Kraus and Norwood Public Access TV station manager Jack Tolman in the control room.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. fell after "Puss in Boots," the spinoff from the studio's "Shrek" movies, missed analysts' estimates in its weekend theatrical debut. The movie opened with $34 million in US and Canadian ticket sales, trailing the $42 million estimate of Boxoffice.com. Most analysts attributed the disappointing numbers to a snowstorm in the Northeast and Friday's final World Series game.

Warner Bros. said Wednesday that it will become the first Hollywood studio to license its movies to a national video-on-demand service that will connect to television sets in China. The studio said it expects the service to be available in 3 million homes with cable TV in China by the end of summer. It said it believes there is the potential to reach 200 million households eventually.
