PORTLAND, Ore. — There are plenty of smart, stylish chefs who have put down roots and opened up shop in this cool Northwest city. You can also find them if you are exploring Willamette Valley’s wine or cheese makers or cruising the region around the Columbia River. This part of the world feels almost unfriendly to food chains. But many locals have welcomed Burgerville — where fast-food culture meets eco-friendly enlightenment — a chain of 39 restaurants within a 180-mile radius of Portland.

If strawberry shortcake is your idea of a heavenly treat, head to Sandwich on Saturday for the annual Strawberry Festival at the Thornton W. Burgess Society's Green Briar Nature Center. The shortcake here is as traditional as it comes -- of course, the whipped cream is real -- and you can get a lesson in making strawberry jam at the same 20-burner stove the center has been using since World War I. The festival runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., but the kids might want to show up early for story hour at 10:30.

I grew up driving a route that has disappeared. For years, our family would hop in Dad’s silver diesel Dasher wagon every weekend for the drive from my hometown of Atkinson to our Lakes Region cottage. For 66 miles along Routes 111, 125, and 11, it was New Hampshire at its best: tree-lined local highways passing through small towns flecked with mom-and-pop establishments. “125?’’ says Fritz Wetherbee of WMUR-TV’s “New Hampshire Chronicle.’’ “It ain’t that no more.’’ Sure enough, there are now three Wal-Marts on the route, a Burger King, a few...
