Luciano Emilio's stoppage-time goal - in the 92d minute - on a counterattack gave D.C. United a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire last night in Bridgeview, Ill. Jaime Moreno tied the score, 1-1, for United in the 63d minute. The Fire had given up just six goals in their first nine games. The victory was the first for United in seven road games. Galaxy 3, Rapids 2 - Alvaro Pires and Edson Buddle scored first-half goals to help David Beckham get a win in his return as Los Angeles beat visiting Colorado.

Baseball A 1949 MVP plaque owned by Red Sox slugger Ted Williams sold for nearly $300,000 at the first major auction of his sports, military, and personal memorabilia Saturday. Nearly 800 items sold at the auction at Fenway Park, and some of the proceeds from the auction will benefit The Jimmy Fund. Among the top sales was a baseball that Babe Ruth signed for Williams, "To my pal Ted Williams, From Babe Ruth," which sold for $195,500. Hunt Auctions Inc. says that sale set a record for a baseball signed by Ruth that wasn't used in a game.

Diego Maradona's first match in charge of UAE club Al Wasl ended in with a 4-3 loss to league champion Al Jazira on Thursday after his team gave up the deciding goal in stoppage time. Al Wasl, which lost 4-0 to Al Jazira on the day Maradona's signing was announced in mid-May, rallied to tie after trailing 3-1 at halftime. All three goals for Al Wasl were scored by Argentine Mariano Donda, a recent signing by Maradona. Brazilian striker Bare headed Al Jazira's late winner at the Mohammed Bin Zayed stadium.

Kelyn Rowe and Chris Tierney scored in the first half and the Revolution beat the Los Angeles Galaxy, 3-1, late Saturday night in Carson, Calif. Saer Sene scored in the 65th minute to put New England (2-2-0) up, 3-0. "I think for us it was a good start. We came out and executed the game plan, which was we wanted to keep possession," said Revolution coach Jay Heaps. "We knew that L.A.'s so good on the attack and you know the old cliché, the best defense is a good offense.

Danso's late goal helped the Timbers (11-14-9) finish the season on a positive note after barely missing out on a playoff berth. Alan Gordon scored the second of his two goals in stoppage time to help Toronto FC salvage a 2-2 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night. Juan Pablo Angel put the Galaxy ahead with a goal in the 90th minute. Toronto answered in the waning moments of extra time when Gordon finished a volley from inside the box that found the upper-right corner of the net. Eddie Johnson scored on a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time to give the Burn a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids last night in Dallas. Dallas, which played the last 20 minutes with only nine players, was awarded a penalty kick after Colorado defender Ritchie Kotschau took down Bobby Rhine from behind. Johnson scored his seventh goal of the season by shooting into the right corner of the net. Dallas's Simo Valakari was ejected after receiving his second yellow card in the 57th minute.

Tennis The United States swept favored Switzerland out of the Davis Cup yesterday in Fribourg, Switzerland, when Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan beat Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Teaming for the second time, Fish and Bryan comfortably handled the 2008 Olympic doubles champions in front of an occasionally hostile Swiss crowd of 7,000. The doubles victory gave the Americans a 3-0 lead in the best-of-five, first-round series. They advanced to the quarterfinals in April when they again will be on the road - against France or Canada.

The Palestinian soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with Thailand on Thursday, ending a World Cup qualifying campaign that had become a symbol of nation building. This was the Palestinians' highest-profile game played on home soil. The team was a big long shot to make it to the tournament in Brazil in 2014, but a victory over Afghanistan in the first round provided hope. The Palestinian team is the only one of FIFA's 208 members that is not a U.N. recognized state.
