An inveterate musical adventurer, Sting is no stranger to rearranging his catalog. Whether that’s meant acoustic reworkings, Spanish-language retrofits, or live improvisations, he fearlessly pushes his own songs around. So it was just a matter of time before the famously posh Brit would go the symphonic route. Certainly an orchestra is a big enough umbrella, but some of the songs — from both the Police and Sting’s solo career — definitely end up getting wet. Several tunes offer expected pleasures, including the crisp pluck lent to “Englishman in New York’’ by a phalanx of string players.

Thousands of protesters in New York demanded an end to income inequality and housing foreclosures. Police fired tear gas to disperse marchers in Oakland, Calif. And black-clad demonstrators smashed windows in Seattle and occupied a building owned by the Catholic archdiocese in San Francisco. Activists across the U.S. joined in worldwide May Day protests Tuesday, with anti-Wall Street demonstrators leading the way in some cities as they tried to recapture the enthusiasm that propelled their movement last fall.

Sheryl Swoopes scored 29 points and Tina Thompson added 19 to lead the Houston Comets to a 60-53 victory over host Charlotte in the Sting's season opener last night. Swoopes and Thompson combined for all but 12 of Houston's points as the Comets (1-1) bounced back from Thursday's season-opening loss to San Antonio. Swoopes, limited to 8 points on 4-of-13 shooting Thursday, scored 8 straight points in a run that gave Houston a 38-32 lead with 11:38 left. Thompson's 3-pointer with 8:33 remaining gave the Comets their largest lead, 47-36.

Massachusetts regulators say they have caught 20 unlicensed electricians who were advertising their services on Craigslist. The state Division of Professional Licensure said it conducted a sting in which it contacted electricians who advertised on Craigslist but did not include a license number, and asked them to come to a home to install a light fixture or socket. When the contractors arrived, officials say they were asked by state investigators posing as the homeowners to produce license information.

Reprinted from late editions of yesterday's Globe. There is something so fabulously not magical about attending a concert being taped for later broadcast during a PBS pledge drive. It's where you get to see a harried makeup guy jog on stage to powder the star's face between songs, and where the surprise guest isn't some local yokel but John Mayer - doing Frank Sinatra. It's definitely the only place you see Sting, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, and the Boston Pops make four attempts at getting "Shape of My Heart" right.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Ruthie Bolton scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half, spearheading a surge by the Sacramento bench that helped the Monarchs beat the Detroit Shock, 67-51, last night. Rebekkah Brunson and Chantelle Anderson, also reserves, had 10 points apiece. Sacramento's bench outscored Detroit's subs, 43-11. Deanna Nolan had 11 points and a career-best 10 rebounds for Detroit, which also got 11 points from Ruth Riley. But Swin Cash, chosen earlier yesterday as WNBA Player of the Week, scored only 7. MANSFIELD — After being a bouncy punk hit, a solo number, a jazz tune, and tango, “Roxanne’’ is now an orchestral arrangement, which is to say that the song’s author, Sting, is enthralled with the idea of performing these days with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Sting cut an album of chestnuts from his days with the Police and his solo catalog and is expanding the concept with a summer tour. The show filled about half the Comcast Center last night, and the proceedings ran from energetic to snoozy.

MURPHY, Texas -- A sting in which police teamed up with "Dateline NBC" to catch online pedophiles was supposed to send a flinty-eyed, Texas-style warning about this Dallas suburb: Don't mess with Murphy. Instead, it has turned into a fiasco. One of the 25 men caught in the sting -- a prosecutor from a neighboring county -- committed suicide when police came to arrest him. The Murphy city manager who approved the operation lost his job in the ensuing furor. And the district attorney is refusing to prosecute any of the men, saying many of the cases were...

Q. Help! I have been in my house for 10 years, but this year my yard and outdoor areas are inundated by wasps. They are all over the house, in the ground and making big paper nests. I am desperate for a repellent or just to kill them. I've been stung twice. This year is the worst in 10 years. MARK POWERS, Newbury A. You hit the problem right on the head. You have two kinds: a paper wasp, which makes nests the size of a football, and the ones in the ground, called mud daubers or ground wasps.

INDIANAPOLIS - The fury that Doc Rivers harbored during the Celtics' 93-86 loss in Chicago Thursday was unleashed in a postgame tirade that challenged his team's toughness and desire. It was a scathing and surprising assessment considering the Celtics led until deep into the third quarter and were a couple of possessions from stealing a victory. Still, Rivers attacked his team's approach, accused them of being "cool" and lackadaisical in a critical game. As they prepare to face the Pacers Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the Celtics will be challenged...

The temptation to howl about the outcome of the Red Sox' 2012 season opener and how it came to be might be hard to resist: "We waited all wintah for them to remind us of Septembah!" But please, do a better job of resisting than ... well, than I just did. Sure, there was a familiar ending to the Red Sox' 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers this afternoon. The Tigers walked off victorious in their final at-bat just as the Orioles did in the final, collapse-confirming loss a season ago. Alfredo Aceves as Jonathan Papelbon, Austin Jackson as Robert Andino ... yup, it...

Pop Sting If On a Winter's Night . . . Cherry Tree/Deutsche Grammophon ESSENTIAL “The Snow It Melts the Soonest’’ Sting eschews the conventional approach to holiday releases - slap dash versions of jingle bell-dressed carols and reverential hymns-with-strings - with this shivery homage to the season of icicles and introspection. In the liner notes he explains that the snowy season is his favorite, calling it “both bleak and profoundly beautiful.’’ He expertly captures that mood on this mix of traditional songs, lullabies, hymns, and a pair of...
