With “Shutter Island,’’ Martin Scorsese proves susceptible to the chic of filming a Dennis Lehane bestseller. Clint Eastwood turned “Mystic River’’ into lugubrious opera; Ben Affleck pumped “Gone Baby Gone’’ full of pulp. Surprisingly, Scorsese divines Hitchcock in the competing genres of Lehane’s book, which trotted out psychological suspense, grisly melodrama, wartime horror, and some risibly punning names while spinning a yarn about two federal marshals on the hunt for an escaped mental patient.

By Jessica Bartlett, Town Correspondent According to author Christopher Klein, although “Shutter Island” was a fictitious island off the coast of Boston, the 34 real Boston Harbor Islands are even more bizarre. At his book talk tonight at 7 p.m. at the Hingham Public Library, Klein will delve into the history, tales, and terrors of the land not far off the shores of Quincy, Hingham, and Hull, all things he explored while writing and recently revising his book “Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands: A Guide to the City's Hidden Shores.” It’s a best-kept...

Cohasset's Kate Bosworth does her best Michelle Pfeiffer (in "The Age of Innocence") in a new Harper's Bazaar feature that re-creates scenes from Martin Scorsese movies. Scorsese - whose new film, "Hugo," opens next month - helped put the feature together, working with photographer Jason Schmidt . We don't see a re-creation of "The Departed" or "Shutter Island" in the mix, which is too bad. We would have liked to have seen who Scorsese would have dressed up as Leonardo DiCaprio 's Billy Costigan.

SHUTTER ISLAND (Comcast Movies: All Movies) Martin Scorsese proves susceptible to the chic of filming a Dennis Lehane bestseller. It’s an inspired extraction though not a terribly satisfying one. “A Nightmare on Elm Street’’ bastardizes the Wes Craven original. Teens in a small town are having nightmares starring the same fellow. His name is Freddy Krueger. He’s fast, nimble, and strong. He has burned skin. He wears a fedora, a striped pull-over, and a glove with knives along the fingers. He’s part Michael Jackson, part Wolverine, part commercial for ProActiv Solution. Freddy kills kids in their dreams. Why becomes clear, if not logical, as the bodies pile up. We are treated to one victim being whipped around her room like a doll.

Seven miles away, on the Boston waterfront, men in suits and women in high heels are racing to meetings and appointments. On Lovells Island, just 25 minutes by ferry from Long Wharf, the only meetings taking place are between seabirds and the minnows they're hunting in the shallows. The double-crested cormorants float along serenely, disappearing for several moments beneath the surface, while the least terns divebomb in between, with plenty of the wriggling fish to satisfy both species of predator.
