FORT MYERS, Fla. - Bobby Valentine is getting ready to make some decisions about his pitching staff. "We're going to collectively map this thing out now," he said Monday after the Red Sox lost to the Twins, 8-4, at JetBlue Park. "It's about time to really figure it out. Probably going to make some cuts again so that we're down to a real manageable number and we'll have a pretty definite spot that they're going to pitch in. " Valentine said he's "not happy" with the bullpen because nobody has pitched in the role they'll be in once the season starts.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff FORT MYERS, Fla. × Ryan Kalish didn't wait to get in the batting cage this morning. He took his 10 swings as soon he could, taking confident cuts at balls on a tee. The outfielder, who turns 24 later this month, swung a bat for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in November. "Actually pretty strong," Kalish said when asked how he felt. "It was great. " Kalish has already started throwing. So now, after months of rehab work, he is starting to play baseball again.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - For Rich Hill, spring training is measured in ways that will never show up on a box score. On Friday, the triumph came early in the morning when he rolled out of bed and didn't feel any twinge of pain in his left elbow. Hill, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw batting practice for the first time Thursday. He wondered how his arm would feel the next day after 17 pitches thrown at full effort. The answer was gratifying. "It felt like I hadn't pitched," Hill said.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Intellectually, Ryan Kalish understands the position he is in. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in November and that takes at least six months to heal. It's the emotional aspects of the situation that the 23-year-old outfielder is having trouble with. "People tried to explain it to me, but I never realized how difficult this was going to be," Kalish said Saturday. "It's rough. This whole process has honestly been the biggest challenge of my life so far. It has been tough.
