The Red Sox need a right fielder. J.D. Drew is a free agent and will not be returning after five years in Boston. Josh Reddick, who held the job while Drew was on the disabled list last season, was traded to Oakland Wednesday. Ryan Kalish was supposed to be the solution. An athletic 23-year-old who has climbed steadily through the minor leagues, Kalish was in line to replace Drew and add some vitality to the lineup. But injuries have delayed a promising career, the latest setback being shoulder surgery in November that could keep Kalish out for a month or two in the upcoming season.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have offseason surgery on his sore right shoulder but should be ready to throw by spring training. Manager Joe Girardi said yesterday that the procedure will shave down calcification of the A.C. joint on the top of Rivera's shoulder. The surgery hasn't been scheduled, but Girardi said it doesn't appear to be a serious injury and there is no structural damage. "From what I've learned, he's had it the whole year. Has it progressively got worse over the course of the year?

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff The trade of Josh Reddick to Oakland opened up significant playing time in right field for the Red Sox. One logical solution would be Ryan Kalish, the athletic 23-year-old who performed well in 2010 before being sidelined for nearly all of the 2011 season with injuries. But in an interview with the Globe this afternoon, Kalish revealed that in addition to the surgery he had on his neck in September, he also had surgery on his left shoulder on Nov. 8 to repair a torn labrum.

Houston Astros reliever Brandon Lyon is planning to have surgery on his pitching shoulder next week and likely is out for the season. Lyon will be examined on Wednesday by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Florida. The operation is scheduled for Thursday. The right-handed closer has tears in his rotator cuff and his labrum, plus a problem with the biceps tendon. He went on the disabled list last week, only a few days after returning from a previous DL stint. The tendon in the biceps is causing him the most pain.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Bobby Valentine is getting ready to make some decisions about his pitching staff. "We're going to collectively map this thing out now," he said Monday after the Red Sox lost to the Twins, 8-4, at JetBlue Park. "It's about time to really figure it out. Probably going to make some cuts again so that we're down to a real manageable number and we'll have a pretty definite spot that they're going to pitch in. " Valentine said he's "not happy" with the bullpen because nobody has pitched in the role they'll be in once the season starts.

"It was great. " Kalish has already started throwing. So now, after months of rehab work, he is starting to play baseball again.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - For Rich Hill, spring training is measured in ways that will never show up on a box score. On Friday, the triumph came early in the morning when he rolled out of bed and didn't feel any twinge of pain in his left elbow. Hill, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw batting practice for the first time Thursday. He wondered how his arm would feel the next day after 17 pitches thrown at full effort. The answer was gratifying. "It felt like I hadn't pitched," Hill said.
