James Taylor was joined by one of his sons at Sunday's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial dedication in Washington. " Taylor also sang "Shed a Little Light," which he wrote specially for King. No problem "I would rather if people love or hate my music.

The title of Sheryl Crow’s seventh album refers to the distance of her Missouri hometown from one of the chief seats of classic Southern soul. On “100 Miles From Memphis,’’ you can feel the pride and love she has for the fertile musical ground of her native region in every punchy Stax-style horn riff, slinky Al Green-inspired vocal, and sultry guitar lick. Unfortunately, the desire to capture that vibe outweighs strong melodies or a tight sense of dynamics on the first half of the album.

KID ROCK With Sheryl Crow At: Comcast Center, Saturday night MANSFIELD - Since 1998, when he broke through to the mainstream with his head-rattling, rump-shaking explosion of rap-rock swagger, “Bawitdaba,’’ Kid Rock has shown remarkable staying power. Others may be better songwriters, singers, or rappers, but few artists work as hard and have as much fun as the relentlessly proud son of Detroit. Over the years Rock has shrewdly, and sincerely, refined his good-time sound to land comfortably at a spot where Bob Seger intersects with...

Radio station 98.5 FM's MixFest might have a 12-year history, but with only five acts, Saturday's show at the Bank of America Pavilion featured one of the sparsest lineups since 1994. Quantity isn't everything, though. Compare that year's headliner (Huey Lewis and the News) with this year's (Sheryl Crow), and even Saturday's uneven show was strong enough to keep the tradition alive. Opening act the Pat McGee Band's bland acoustic pop was met with plenty of screams, but McGee's WB-ready looks couldn't counteract a generally static stage presence.

For an established hitmaker, the decision on how much of a new album to play in concert is always tricky. Thursday night at the Citi Wang Theatre, Sheryl Crow and her smoking new 10-piece band leaned heavily on her recent soul-flavored release, “100 Miles From Memphis.’’ It might have been a little too heavily represented for some in the two-thirds-full crowd. The response was vocally enthusiastic but many folks stayed seated during even the most upbeat of new tunes. Possible set list gripes aside, there was no quibbling with the spirited performance on display...

Sheryl Crow knows about unanticipated bends in the road. Last night at the Bank of America Pavilion, the spitfire rocker, cancer-free since late 2006, told the crowd,"It's the detours that really teach you about who you are. " Who she was last night - in a show itself that was detoured from the Comcast Center - was a musician with energy to burn and a songwriter with something to say. Throughout her 1 hour and 40 minute set, Crow,...

"What a pretty voice. But what's the matter with your chart? Find out and fix it. " "Pardon me, your signals to the band were wack. Practice at home in your room. If you look goofy doing it, don't do it. " "Sing the first verse again, and sing it to . . . excuse me, in the third row, what's your name? Hannah? Sing it to Hannah, and your goal is to get her phone number. " Those are a few of the pearls of wisdom dispensed at Berklee College of Music this week by Dorian Holley, the associate music director and vocal coach on "American Idol.
