WILMINGTON - Shawn Thornton was fine with the message. He joked, however, that he didn't care for the timing. Thornton had just completed his pregame warm-up routine prior to Game 6. But after he ducked into the dressing room, Bruins coach Claude Julien gave him the news that no player wants to hear. With his team facing elimination, Thornton would have to watch the game instead of playing in it. "I don't give a [expletive] this time of year," Thornton said of being scratched.

While Brad Marchand walked around the balcony of TD Garden last night, carrying three cups of popcorn and a Gatorade as he served the first part of a five-game suspension, Shawn Thornton was on the ice doing his usual thing against the Winnipeg Jets. Although the Bruins certainly missed the energy level and grit of Marchand, especially during the first two periods when they were admittedly quiet and unusually slow, the third period of an eventual 5-3 win showed the same Boston team that fans have been used to seeing.

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff Bruins forward Shawn Thornton talked about the physical play that has been a big part of the turnaround in the series against the Canucks. "I don't know about more physical [than Game 3], it's playoffs, it's the finals," Thornton said after the 4-0 Game 4 victory over the Canucks. "We are going to want to be physical every night. I think tonight we did a good job of being able to get in on the forecheck. If we are not playing physical then we are not playing the right way. It's not our main focus, but it's one area of our focus.

Randy Carlyle hasn't considered Shawn Thornton one of his charges since 2006-07, when they won a ring in Anaheim. Their five-year separation, however, has done little to dampen Carlyle's admiration for his former fourth-liner, who signed a two-year, $2.2 million extension Saturday. "He hasn't changed his style or approach," said Carlyle, now Toronto's coach. "I think he's getting more recognition because he went out and earned it. He's a catalyst. He was a catalyst for our hockey club when we had him in Anaheim.

The pane of glass that tumbled onto David Krejci after Game 1 of the first-round series against the Capitals didn't keep him out of Saturday's lineup. But Krejci didn't contribute as much as he'd hoped. For the second game in a row, the Bruins' most offensive-minded center had little presence in the offensive zone. In 27 minutes 57 seconds of ice time, Krejci had three shots, as he and linemates Milan Lucic and Rich Peverley combined for eight of Boston's 44. That's just not enough.

The Stanley Cup champs took a little off the top Wednesday - OK, a lot off the top - at their annual Cuts for a Cause fund-raiser at Royale. Now in its fifth year, the barber event benefits the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. "The guys get a free haircut and we raise a lot of money for a great cause," B's bruiser Shawn Thornton told us. "Granted, some guys look better than others afterward.
