Shawn Horcoff's shootout goal beat goalie Roberto Luongo and lifted the Oilers out of the Western Conference basement with a 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night in Edmonton. Horcoff, Tom Gilbert, Marty Reasoner, and Dustin Penner scored in regulation as Edmonton snapped a two-game losing streak. Alexandre Burrows, Brad Isbister, Alexander Edler, and Markus Naslund had goals for Vancouver. The win kicked off a crucial six-game homestand for Edmonton (8-12-1)

Colton Orr and Ryan Hollweg snapped career-high scoring droughts as the Rangers used some unexpected offense to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-0, last night at New York, breaking a four-game losing streak. Orr hadn't scored in 65 games, Hollweg in 84. Hollweg hadn't even had a point in his last 53 games. Sean Avery, in his first home game since being acquired from Los Angeles, netted his first goal with New York, and Marcel Hossa and Jaromir Jagr also scored as the Rangers earned a much-needed victory.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin each had a goal and an assist and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 on Sunday to run their winning streak to four and points string to 13. Sami Salo, Kevin Bieksa and Chris Higgins also scored, and Cory Schneider made 26 saves for Vancouver. The Canucks are 10-0-3 during their points streak to improve to 38-15-6. They are two points behind Detroit for the NHL lead. Shawn Horcoff and Magnus Paajarvi scored for Edmonton. The Oilers have lost three in row and five of their last six to drop to 22-30-6.

Ryan Smyth scored the winning goal and added an assist as the Edmonton Oilers rallied with three goals in the third period to beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 on Monday night. Taylor Hall and Ryan Jones also scored and captain Shawn Horcoff had three assists for the Oilers, who are 2-1-1 after finishing last in the NHL for two straight seasons. Sergei Kostitsyn had the lone goal for the Predators (2-2-1), who have lost three in a row following two wins to open the season. Nashville recorded only 12 shots, and yielded 25 to Edmonton.

Mike Ribeiro celebrated his new contract with two assists and a long-awaited victory. Antti Miettinen scored two goals to help the Stars end a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild in Dallas last night. Rookie Matt Niskanen also scored for the Stars, who hadn't lost four in a row since a five-game skid in 2003. The night wasn't a complete success for Ribeiro, who signed a new five-year, $25 million contract before the game. He failed to convert a penalty shot at 11:44 of the first period.

Nikolai Khabibulin made 26 saves for Edmonton, three nights after stopping 37 shots in a 4-0 home victory over Calgary in the Oilers’ first game under coach Tom Renney. Former Boston College star Marty Reasoner scored twice in the second period for the Panthers in their season opener.
