Josh Beckett's three wins this season have come against teams that are a combined 49-52. Take away the April victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, and that record is 26-48 (Minnesota, Seattle). That's one way to look at Beckett's bumpy season thus far. It's something else to point out that after yesterday's stellar outing against the Quadruple A Seattle Mariners, Beckett now has five quality starts on the season. That's the same amount as Jon Lester, James Shields, and David Price.

In Ron Washington's view, Texas pitcher Scott Feldman did an adequate job making a fill-in start after Neftali Feliz ended up on the disabled list and the Rangers were left with limited options. Except for one poorly placed pitch from Feldman that led to four runs. "We wanted a sinker so we can keep it on the ground," Washington said. "It didn't go on the ground; the ball left the park. " Seattle's Alex Liddi hit the first major league grand slam by an Italian-born player in half-century, Kevin Millwood threw six shutout innings and the Mariners took two of three from AL...

SEATTLE -- The same Seahawks who all season couldn't buy a break with all of team owner Paul Allen's Microsoft money finally got lucky. But now they're going to have to be good, too. Or at least better than they've been. All of Seattle -- players, coaches, and fans alike -- reveled in advancing to the NFC's divisional playoffs. The day of exhale yesterday was time for reflection upon the Seahawks' 8-point rally over the final seven minutes of Saturday night's amazing 21-20 win over Dallas.

Elvis Andrus lined a two-strike pitch into the left-center field gap for a two-run triple, Josh Hamilton made two tremendous catches in center field and added an RBI double, and the Texas Rangers snapped Seattle's win streak at four with a 3-1 win over the Mariners on Tuesday night. While Hamilton continues to scuffle at the plate, his defense in the outfield remains suburb. His biggest play came in the first inning when he chased down Casper Wells' two-out bases loaded drive to deep left-center and contorted his body to make the catch on the warning track.

A musical based on the romantic comedy "Sleepless in Seattle" will make its debut a little later than expected. The Pasadena Playhouse in California said Friday it will push the show's premiere from the end of the current 2011-2012 season to the 2012-2013 season. It had been expected to start production this June. Producer David Shor said in a statement he felt it was essential not to rush a show based on such an "iconic" movie. The musical will be a retelling of the 1993 film that starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

SEATTLE - One of the most anticipated trials in Seattle history is set to begin today, complete with bloggers and protesters. The six-day, no-jury trial in federal court will settle the final two years of the SuperSonics' lease at KeyArena. Sonics owner Clay Bennett has gained the NBA's approval to move the team to his hometown of Oklahoma City, but Seattle argues its lease forces the franchise to play two more seasons before departing. The contentious showdown has turned personal between the principals.

In its first two seasons making the transition back to Division I, Seattle made headlines with wins over Oregon State and Virginia. The Redhawks almost added the Cavaliers to the list again Wednesday night, this time as a ranked team, only to fall short in the closing moments. Aaron Broussard scored a career-high 29 points and Sterling Carter added 17, but Seattle couldn't complete its rally from 14 points down in the final 8 minutes, and No. 24 Virginia held on for an 83-77 victory.

SEATTLE -- Matt Hasselbeck waited all season to redeem himself for what happened in last season's playoff game at Green Bay. One year later, the outcome was painfully similar. His counterpart at quarterback, Marc Bulger, threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, the last a 17-yarder to Cam Cleeland with 2:11 to play, leading the Rams to a 27-20 win over Seattle yesterday and making St. Louis the first team without a winning record ever to advance in the NFL playoffs. "We know we're a good team," Bulger said.

SEATTLE - The joys of this city might be best appreciated at night. Seattle teems with clubs of all descriptions, clustered in close-knit neighborhoods, catering to a wide slate of tastes, and enhancing the casualness of the city perfectly. Two of my oldest friends are former Bostonians who now live in Seattle and are staunch advocates. "I love Seattle!" says Lilli Dennison, who used to book and manage a number of Boston and Cambridge clubs. "Seattle is really a huge version of Cambridge," adds Chris Porter, who previously booked the Middle East and Mama Kin in...

Along with being a two-time WNBA champion and recognition as one of the best women’s players in the world, something else changed for Lauren Jackson in the offseason. She grew an inch. Actually, Jackson says she’s always been 6 feet 6. Now at age 30, she finally feels comfortable admitting she’s really 6-6 and not 6-5 as was always listed — not that she needed the extra inch. “I’ve been 6-foot-6 my whole life. I tried to shorten me. I’m a good 6-6. My mum would always say to me, ‘Say 6-6,’ I would say, ‘Nope.’’’ Jackson said.

Hector Noesi wanted his pitch to Elvis Andrus to end up in the dirt. And it did — on the warning track. Texas used Seattle's young right-hander as another example of how the Rangers can win by taking advantage of just one poorly placed pitch. Andrus lined a hanging two-out, two-strike pitch from Noesi into the left-center field gap for a two-run triple, Josh Hamilton made two great catches in center field and added an RBI double, and the Rangers snapped Seattle's win streak at four with a 3-1 win over the Mariners on Tuesday night.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Seattle Seahawks for a draft pick on Monday night and signed former Colts star Dallas Clark to replace him. Earlier in the day, Winslow told SiriusXM radio that first-year coach Greg Schiano was "kind of upset" that Winslow has not been working out with the team during the offseason. "That's kind of shocking, but that's what it is," Winslow said, adding that Schiano told him the coach "would help me out with a trade.

It started with an innocent spurt that only seemed as if it would make an inevitable season-opening loss for Los Angeles a bit more respectable. Before she knew it, Kristi Toliver and the Sparks were pulling off one of their most improbable victories. Toliver scored 10 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter and the Sparks overcame a 21-point deficit in the second half to beat the Seattle Storm 72-66 on Friday night in the WNBA season opener. Los Angeles outscored Seattle 30-10 in the fourth quarter, taking its first lead of the game on Toliver's baseline reverse...

An Anchorage seafood restaurant heralded its grand opening Friday by mimicking Alaska Airlines' splashy salmon show in Seattle. The Seattle-based airline makes a big production each year of delivering the first-of-the-season Copper River king salmon from Alaska to Seattle for preparation by top chefs, who got their celebrated bounty earlier Friday. Hours later, an Anchorage-based seafood processor delivered a 30-pound king and a seven-pound sockeye salmon with much fanfare at The Bridge Seafood Restaurant, which was set for its grand opening later in the...

Seattle police are scratching their heads about this one. A car prowler shattered a window of a parked Jeep, stole nothing and left behind a little something for the car's owner — a dozen tortillas scattered across the floor. The crime happened last week near the University of Washington. Bemused by the break-in, police were moved to pun, saying, "The Seattle Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind car prowlers that you shouldn't break in to something that's nachos.

CAMBRIDGE — Seattle food blogger Michael Natkin is demonstrating a dish from his new cookbook. It's an appetizer of goat cheese with sauteed grapes. "If you blink, you're going to miss it," he says — and he's right. The author of "Herbivoracious: A Flavor Revolution, With 150 Vibrant and Original Vegetarian Recipes," is in the new test kitchen of How2heroes, the cooking videos website. To make the dish, he sautes a bunch of red grapes, which are cut in half ("the only way you can screw this dish up is if you buy grapes with seeds," he says)

The Pac-12 women's basketball tournament is headed to the Pacific Northwest next year: Seattle's Key Arena. Commissioner Larry Scott on Monday announced the move to Seattle, where there's already a strong fan base for women's basketball because of the success of the WNBA's Seattle Storm. Scott calls Seattle is "one of the most prolific women's basketball markets in the country. " Also, the Pac-12 men's tournament is set for Las Vegas next March. Scott is expected to announce a new deal with the MGM Grand, where a news conference is scheduled Tuesday.

The Seattle Mariners' visit to Boston was just two games. It probably felt much longer. The Mariners were shut out by the Red Sox 5-0 on Tuesday. Seattle finished with just four hits as Boston starter Josh Beckett struck out a season-high nine batters. Seattle had a total of 12 hits in the in the short series and was outscored 11-1. "We've got to do a better job of working it on down the line and trying to get the ball rolling from one hitter to the next and on down," manager Eric Wedge said.
