MANAMA, Bahrain - Tens of thousands of protesters chanting "Bahrain is not for sale" jammed a major highway Friday to denounce proposals for unity between the unrest-torn Gulf kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The rally's large turnout - demonstrators stretched for more than three miles on a major highway - underscored the strong backlash to efforts by Bahrain's rulers to integrate policies such as defense and foreign affairs with their Saudi neighbor. Saudi Arabia has aided Bahrain's embattled Sunni monarchy with troops and money during the island nation's 15-month uprising.

JIDDA, Saudi Arabia -- Lobbing grenades, militants invaded Jidda's heavily guarded US Consulate yesterday, attacking staffers and others in the compound until Saudi security forces stormed in. Nine people, none American, were killed in the attack, which was claimed by Al Qaeda and showed how vulnerable Saudi Arabia remains to Islamic extremist violence. The bold assault, the worst in the kingdom since May, indicated that a fierce crackdown waged by Saudi security forces has not completely put down Al Qaeda in the native land of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Gulf Arab envoys are gathering in Saudi Arabia to discuss proposals for greater political and security cooperation in the wake of an Arab Spring uprising in Bahrain and worries about regional rival Iran. Monday's meeting could support closer integration between Saudi Arabia and protest-wracked Bahrain, where Saudi-led forces were deployed last year to aid the embattled Sunni monarchy. But more expansive union plans among the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council may face questions over how much influence would be handed to ultraconservative Saudi Arabia.

More soldiers fanned out through Beirut, with orders to use force to restore security to a nation shaken by nearly a week of sectarian clashes. Lebanese buried more of their dead and tried to resume life in a capital dissected by roadblocks.
