FORT MYERS, Fla. - Intellectually, Ryan Kalish understands the position he is in. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in November and that takes at least six months to heal. It's the emotional aspects of the situation that the 23-year-old outfielder is having trouble with. "People tried to explain it to me, but I never realized how difficult this was going to be," Kalish said Saturday. "It's rough. This whole process has honestly been the biggest challenge of my life so far. It has been tough.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff The trade of Josh Reddick to Oakland opened up significant playing time in right field for the Red Sox. One logical solution would be Ryan Kalish, the athletic 23-year-old who performed well in 2010 before being sidelined for nearly all of the 2011 season with injuries. But in an interview with the Globe this afternoon, Kalish revealed that in addition to the surgery he had on his neck in September, he also had surgery on his left shoulder on Nov. 8 to repair a torn labrum.

The Red Sox need a right fielder. J.D. Drew is a free agent and will not be returning after five years in Boston. Josh Reddick, who held the job while Drew was on the disabled list last season, was traded to Oakland Wednesday. Ryan Kalish was supposed to be the solution. An athletic 23-year-old who has climbed steadily through the minor leagues, Kalish was in line to replace Drew and add some vitality to the lineup. By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff Ryan Kalish will play a rehab game for Short-Season Lowell tomorrow night. He has not played in a game since April 21, when he hurt his left shoulder. Kalish will DH and play the outfield with Lowell until he is ready to rejoin Pawtucket. Kalish has played just 14 games this season. With Pawtucket's season ending Sept. 5, he can get a few more weeks in and perhaps put himself in position for a September call up.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff Good job by Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times, who spoke to Ryan Kalish about his neck surgery last month. The outfield prospect, who was limited to 24 games because of shoulder and neck injuries, is feeling no pain at this point. "At this point, honestly, I can't really tell that anything was done to my neck," Kalish said. "You have post-surgery pain and all that, but that's totally gone. It just feels like a normal neck. My range of motion feels good and I'm not experiencing any pain.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff TORONTO — Ryan Kalish was scheduled to have surgery on his neck last week in Los Angeles. But that has been delayed, according to player development director Mike Hazen. Kalish is seeing different doctors to gather as much information as possible before getting the surgery done. He has a bulging disc that is causing nerve issues. That injury and a previous shoulder injury limited him to 24 games this season, all in the minors. The promising 23-year-old outfielder played 53 games in the majors last season.
