I was quite touched by Joanna Weiss's May 15 op-ed about Barney Frank (" A 40-year journey "). I admire Congressman Frank enormously, and have been grateful to him over the years for his integrity and tireless service. I was appreciative to read his process of coming out, and about his happy relationship and upcoming marriage. However, when I read his explanation for why President Obama is not invited to his wedding, I had to take issue. Frank said that it was nothing personal, but that "the Secret Service could ruin any party.

Serves 6 Buy a boneless leg of lamb and if it comes already tied, remove the strings so you can cut away the excess fat, stud the inside with garlic, and season it with salt and pepper. Let the lamb sit at room temperature for half an hour before you roast it. These cooking times are approximate; use an instant-read meat thermometer to test the internal temperature. If the lamb is done before you need it, cover it loosely with foil and let it rest in a warm place. 1 boneless leg of lamb (5 to 6 pounds)

Serves 4 The weather is warm, but our own growing season has just begun. Many fruits and vegetables in our markets now were picked before they turned fully ripe (to make shipping easier), so they taste disappointing. One lackluster fruit is tomatoes. To intensify their flavor, roast them in a hot oven with a sprinkle of fresh herbs. Toss the charred tomatoes with penne, serve them as a side dish with roast chicken or grilled salmon, or spoon them onto crusty bread. 2 pints cherry tomatoes Olive oil (for sprinkling)

Roast the bird in a 325-degree oven. You can roast it breast-side down on a piece of buttered parchment, turning the bird right-side up after 1 ½ hours. Or roast it breast-side up covered with oiled cheesecloth. A bird is cooked when a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh and the stuffing registers 165 degrees. These times are approximate. A cooked turkey will sit on the counter for 1 hour. After that, remove the stuffing, if necessary, and transfer it to a buttered dish.

Serves 4 Nduja is a spicy pork sausage famous in Calabria. According to Kathleen Weber of Della Fattoria in Petaluma, Calif., “Many artisan sausage makers . . . are producing delicious versions of it’’ in the United States. This makes an incredible juicy roast chicken. If you can’t find Nduja sausage, substitute another spicy Italian sausage. 4 ounces Nduja or other spicy Italian sausage 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 1 whole chicken (3 1/2 to 4 pounds)

When D.J. Lawton was a kid he regularly devoured roast beef sandwiches from Mur-Mac's in Stoughton. The restaurant closed, but the succulent beef on a buttered toasted bun is seared in his memory. Lawton, now 25, graduated from Boston University a few years ago and wanted to run his own business. Last year he opened Roast Beast, a tiny spot in the basement of an Allston apartment building, where a sign with an adorable cow greets you, and sandwiches are fashioned after those from his once-favorite eatery.

For nearly two decades, Whittier Street Health Center has held an annual roast recognizing the achievements of someone who exemplifies excellence and leadership. This year's laugh riot lampooned Boston Foundation president Paul Grogan, and as always raised money for the health center's mission of providing quality, accessible healthcare, and services to a diverse population. Among the mucky-mucks joining Whittier president Frederica Williams were Hizzoner Tom Menino and event cochair Bob Beal, CEO of the Beal Companies.

Elizabeth Warren is a Democrat running for US Senate in Massachusetts, but the challenge she will face this election year was typified in the native-son greeting given to Scott Brown as the Republican incumbent was embraced at this year's South Boston St. Patrick's Day political roast. Brown sat center stage, next to the podium, while Warren sat a row behind and outside the range of the head-on television shot. His eldest daughter, Ayla, was made part of the program, singing "God Bless America" even before Warren was given a chance to speak.

The last time a top Massachusetts politician was photographed in a helmet - Governor Michael Dukakis during his 1988 presidential campaign, trying to show he was tough on defense - it backfired. This time it was different. Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray's grand entrance sporting a NASCAR helmet and racing jacket drew laughter and loud applause at Sunday's Saint Patrick's Day breakfast and political roast at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston.

A guy dressed in sweats is driving 108 miles per hour, looking at storm damage in total darkness, when he crashes his state-owned car. Cue the punchline. When Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray got into his car accident last fall, he did not just imperil his life and professional future. He provided prime fodder for the St. Patrick's Day political roast on Sunday in South Boston, an annual breakfast where political vulnerabilities are exploited to their fullest. "Under those circumstances, you're not looking at storm damage," said comedian Jimmy Tingle.
