When D.J. Lawton was a kid he regularly devoured roast beef sandwiches from Mur-Mac's in Stoughton. The restaurant closed, but the succulent beef on a buttered toasted bun is seared in his memory. Lawton, now 25, graduated from Boston University a few years ago and wanted to run his own business. Last year he opened Roast Beast, a tiny spot in the basement of an Allston apartment building, where a sign with an adorable cow greets you, and sandwiches are fashioned after those from his once-favorite eatery.

For nearly two decades, Whittier Street Health Center has held an annual roast recognizing the achievements of someone who exemplifies excellence and leadership. This year's laugh riot lampooned Boston Foundation president Paul Grogan, and as always raised money for the health center's mission of providing quality, accessible healthcare, and services to a diverse population. Among the mucky-mucks joining Whittier president Frederica Williams were Hizzoner Tom Menino and event cochair Bob Beal, CEO of the Beal Companies.

Elizabeth Warren is a Democrat running for US Senate in Massachusetts, but the challenge she will face this election year was typified in the native-son greeting given to Scott Brown as the Republican incumbent was embraced at this year's South Boston St. Patrick's Day political roast. Brown sat center stage, next to the podium, while Warren sat a row behind and outside the range of the head-on television shot. His eldest daughter, Ayla, was made part of the program, singing "God Bless America" even before Warren was given a chance to speak.

The last time a top Massachusetts politician was photographed in a helmet - Governor Michael Dukakis during his 1988 presidential campaign, trying to show he was tough on defense - it backfired. This time it was different. Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray's grand entrance sporting a NASCAR helmet and racing jacket drew laughter and loud applause at Sunday's Saint Patrick's Day breakfast and political roast at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston.
