When the bullpen door swung open, Chris Perez braced himself. After criticizing Cleveland's fans for failing to support the first-place Indians, Perez wasn't sure what to expect when he came in for the ninth inning with another game on the line. As he entered the field, there was only one sound. The roar carried him. "That's the loudest I've ever been cheered here," Perez said after earning his 14th save in Cleveland's 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. "It didn't go unnoticed, trust me. I'm humbled.

The Detroit Tigers changed their roster and lineup Friday night. It didn’t help them find a way to beat the Boston Red Sox. Porcello (4-3) gave up a season-high six runs in three innings in his first start since allowing one hit in eight innings in a win over the Pirates. “In my last start, I had command of all my pitches,’’ Porcello said.

Things were so bad for the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night that Jeff Francoeur got called out twice on a double. The umpires got that call right, but the Royals couldn't fix all of the other mistakes in a 9-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The bizarre play happened in the ninth inning. Francoeur hit a drive to left-center that hit the top of the fence and bounced straight into the air. Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson reached over the wall and into the Kansas City bullpen and caught the ball, saving a homer.

Buck Showalter sat by his desk as his cellphone beeped loudly every 30 seconds or so, no doubt with texts and emails of congratulations. He didn't want to think about his 1,000th win as a major league manager. He already was focusing on No. 1,001. "I'm very appreciative of the players making me feel really young tonight even though I'm an old goat," Showalter said after his Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees, 7-1, Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. Brian Matusz ended his 11-month losing streak, and Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered off struggling Phil Hughes to...

Rain is following the Kansas City Royals. Their scheduled game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed because of bad weather Monday night, Kansas City's second rainout in three days. This one will be made up at 7:05 p.m. on Sept. 24, which had been a mutual off day for both teams before playing each other the following day at Comerica Park. "You don't want to wait until September, but that's a better option than sitting here for hours trying to wait out this rain," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Tigers will not have Magglio Ordonez for the remainder of the playoffs. An X-ray and CT scan taken yesterday revealed a fracture in his right ankle at the same spot he had surgically repaired 13 months ago. A few days ago, Ordonez had told manager Jim Leyland he felt the best he had in months. "My trainer came in during the rain delay [on Saturday] and said Magglio can't go. The ankle is killing him. I was almost flabbergasted, to be honest with you," Leyland said.

The Detroit Tigers' spectacular start is almost entirely forgotten. Chone Figgins hit a two-out, tiebreaking double in the seventh inning that was misjudged by right fielder Brennan Boesch, and Seattle completed a three-game sweep of the Tigers with a 5-4 victory Thursday. Miguel Cabrera hit his sixth home run for the Tigers, who have lost six of seven after a 9-3 start. "We're not getting big hits late in the game. We're not making some plays, we're not pitching real good, we're not managing good enough, we're not coaching good enough," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.
