By Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff PHILADELPHIA -- Things fall apart. A big first-half lead and the Celtics' hopes of an easy series fell hard Friday night with an 92-83 loss at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers. There will be a Game 6 next week in Philadelphia. Talk of a potential Celtics-Pacers Conference Finals turned out to be premature. With a towel wrapped around his head, Kevin Garnett sat and stared at the box score in one corner of the Celtics locker room after Game 4. He's accustomed to staring at his numbers after each game, but he usually does it while taking...

I WANT to thank the Globe for again printing the full text of the Declaration of Independence (Editorial, July 4). The Globe continues to provide evidence of the necessity of newspapers - those places where we can find things we need without even knowing or remembering that we need them, and without having to go look for them. What a wonderful thing it is to open my newspaper and exclaim, “Oh yeah! I’m glad the paper has this!’’ How do you find something (like on the Internet)

Q. During a self-exam in March, I noticed a painful lump above my left breast. I was told repeatedly that painful lumps are rarely breast cancer, and that it was probably a benign fibroid. I was unable to get a doctor to take it seriously. During an appointment for another procedure, I insisted that the doctor examine my breast. The lump was growing like crazy and getting more painful. I had an immediate mammogram, a biopsy was recommended, and I received a confirmation of breast cancer in May. By then, the lump had grown to the size of a small fist.

The Diocese of Providence is issuing a reminder about changes to the Roman Missal. The diocese says it, and other parishes across the United States, will implement the changes during Masses held this weekend. That means parishioners will be asked to recite revised responses during Mass. The changes are the result of a new translation of the Roman Missal. The diocese says the new translation aims to provide parishioners with more spiritual language for worship and be more consistent with the Latin original.

By Sara Brown, Town Correspondent The Boston University police have issued a reminder to students to use caution when visiting the Charles River Esplanade this summer, in light of several unsolved sexual assaults in the area. Over the last five years, a series of unsolved late-night or early-morning sexual assaults at South Boston's Joe Moakley Park and around the Esplanade have targeted women who are alone, the police said in a press release. The police urged to students to be aware of their surroundings, not to accept rides from strangers, to avoid traveling alone during late night...

Time's up! Federal and state taxes are due at midnight. They can be filed electronically at irs.gov/efile for federal taxes and mass.gov/dor for state taxes. Or they can be sent by mail, as long as they are postmarked by midnight. You can also ask for an extension through the websites or by mail, but if you owe taxes you still must pay them by Tuesday midnight. No Massachusetts post offices are planning extended hours. If you are using the mail, you will need to trek to the Fort Point post office in Boston, which is regularly open until midnight.

The fried chicken, of course, did not cause the historic September collapse of the Boston Red Sox. But when the whole ugly affair came out later, it was the perfect symbol for it, a shorthand metaphor for feeling gross inside. And at the dawn of a new season Thursday, and Fenway open again, there it was doing brisk business, the Popeyes chicken at the center of it all, with a taunting new banner and that framed photo on the wall. For those who need reminding, the story goes like this: When the superstar pitchers were not on the mound - Josh Beckett, John...

THE REPORT that the bishop of Worcester pressed Anna Maria College to rescind the invitation to Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and refused to meet with her to hear her out, reminded me of two things (Page A1, March 31). One is a line we used to use in our house when our kids were young, though we said it in jest: "My mind's made up, don't confuse me with facts. " The other is a line in the US Supreme Court decision that overturned a Massachusetts banned-book ruling. Justice William Douglas said that the state attorney general had banned the book "so that the citizens of Massachusetts might be spared...

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Osama bin Laden's mention of the Iraq war in his video message is a reminder of Al Qaeda's long-term objectives in Iraq and of the "dangerous world in which we live. " "Iraq is part of this war against extremists," Bush said in a rare reponse to a message from the terrorist leader. "If Al Qaeda bothers to mention Iraq, it's because they want to achieve their objectives in Iraq, which is to drive us out. " Bin Laden's video, part of which was broadcast by Al-Jazeera television, emerged just days before the sixth...

Simon de Swaan has seen many fairy tale engagements on Valentine's Day. In the august dining room of Aujourd'hui in the Four Seasons, where he's been assistant food and beverage manager for seven years, he has also seen engagements gone terribly awry, a wedding ring hurled across the room and lots of tears. Valentine's Day is a day of extremes. And few are privy to as many extreme situations as bartenders and restaurant staffs. From their vantage point, they see you at your best and at your worst.
