Time's up! Federal and state taxes are due at midnight. They can be filed electronically at irs.gov/efile for federal taxes and mass.gov/dor for state taxes. Or they can be sent by mail, as long as they are postmarked by midnight. You can also ask for an extension through the websites or by mail, but if you owe taxes you still must pay them by Tuesday midnight. No Massachusetts post offices are planning extended hours. If you are using the mail, you will need to trek to the Fort Point post office in Boston, which is regularly open until midnight.

THE REPORT that the bishop of Worcester pressed Anna Maria College to rescind the invitation to Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and refused to meet with her to hear her out, reminded me of two things (Page A1, March 31). One is a line we used to use in our house when our kids were young, though we said it in jest: "My mind's made up, don't confuse me with facts. " The other is a line in the US Supreme Court decision that overturned a Massachusetts banned-book ruling. Justice William Douglas said that the state attorney general had banned the book "so that the citizens of Massachusetts might be spared...
