NEW YORK - Reader's Digest's parent company is in talks to sell Rachael Ray's cooking magazine to Meredith Corp., publisher of Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, Parents, and Fitness. Assuming a deal is concluded, the January issue of Every Day with Rachael Ray could be the magazine's first under Meredith. A spokesman for Reader's Digest Association confirmed the company was negotiating with Meredith. Ray called the prospect of having her magazine published by Meredith "a very happy transition.

The narrator of this silkily repugnant novel is 17-year-old Mari, who helps her shrewish widowed mother run a small seaside hotel in a Japanese resort town. While out one day Mari runs into an older man she recognizes as a guest who was recently ejected from the hotel for causing a ruckus with a prostitute. Soft-spoken and attentive, he intrigues Mari. She accompanies him to his home, where he suddenly turns into the Marquis de Sade, subjecting her to elaborate sexual bondage and degradation.

ABC's "General Hospital" led with 23 nominations Wednesday in a Daytime Emmy Awards field with notable omissions as well as old favorites. The television academy said "General Hospital" will compete with NBC's "Days of Our Lives," CBS' "The Young and the Restless" and the canceled "All My Children" of ABC for best soap opera. CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful" has won that trophy three years running but wasn't nominated this year. Another surprising absentee is ABC's other axed drama, "One Life to Live," said Carolyn Hinsey, author of "Afternoon Delight: Why Soaps Still Matter.

Food Network Iron Chef Michael Symon turned a triple dose of pork into a third consecutive top win at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival's annual Burger Bash. I received my November Rachael Ray magazine with a letter that stated that this double issue is so good that it will be counted as two issues instead of one, so your subscription will be adjusted accordingly.
