Bernie & Phyl's Furniture says the chain will open its first upscale shop, known as Metro Living, on Friday in Natick. The 5,000-square-foot space, next to the retailer's new showroom, features a line of higher styled and finer quality upholstery and leather living room furniture, the company said. Some of the brands include Better Homes & Gardens Upholstery, Paula Deen, and Comfort Design. The store will offer hundreds of fabric options for each item. Prices will range from about $1,000 to $3,000.

Amylin Pharmaceuticals won federal approval for Bydureon, its weekly injection drug for Type 2 diabetes, ending years of setbacks. Its main competitor is expected to be Novo Nordisk's Victoza. Novo Nordisk has hired celebrity chef Paula Deen to promote Victoza. The FDA twice declined to approve Bydureon in 2010, with its most serious concern being that the drug might contribute to heart rhythm abnormalities. A study by Amylin, which is based in San Diego, suggested this was not the case.

Celebrity chef Paula Deen announced yesterday that she has Type 2 diabetes and she is getting paid to pitch a diabetes drug, but she's also become the reluctant poster woman for what NOT to do to avoid diabetes. News stations have been running footage of her on the Food Network delicately wrapping macaroni and cheese with raw slices of bacon or unveiling a cheeseburger using a doughnut as the bun, while predicting an end to her best-selling cookbooks. All we have to do is connect the dots from doughnuts and bacon to diabetes, right?
