Baseball Mar iano Rivera , 42, has a blood clot in his right calf, the latest health problem for the longtime New York Yankees closer who tore a knee ligament last week while shagging fly balls during batting practice. Rivera is on blood-thinning medication intended to dissolve the clot and says he is OK, though he was scared when he received the diagnosis. He needs to spend at least a week or two strengthening his knee before he has surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament - but he says that would have been the case regardless of the blood clot.

Prohibited from practicing by NFL rules until Thursday, new Seahawks left guard Robert Gallery has been advising his young teammates on the field and looking very much like an assistant coach. Gallery, who came to Seattle as a free agent from the Oakland Raiders, is expected to anchor a line with five starting offensive linemen who have never played as a group in a meaningful game. Center Max Unger was drafted in 2009, left tackle Russell Okung in 2010, and right tackle James Carpenter and right guard John Moffitt were drafted this year.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders fired coach Hue Jackson today after just one season at the helm in the first major move since Reggie McKenzie was hired as general manager. The decision to get rid of Jackson came four days after the team announced the hiring of McKenzie as the team's first general manager since the death of longtime owner Al Davis in October. McKenzie was formally introduced later today. The move marks a rapid fall for Jackson, who was in charge of personnel decisions and coaching after Davis died of heart failure on Oct. 8. Jackson made the trade for quarterback...

Norv Turner walked around the San Diego Chargers' locker room, all smiles, thanking players for the effort and congratulating them for finishing strong. Maybe for the last time. If Turner's tenure in San Diego really, truly is over, at least his players sent him out a winner. And in typical Turner fashion, it again might've come too late. Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes and Richard Goodman returned a kickoff 105 yards for another score, giving the Chargers a 38-26 victory over the Oakland Raiders to keep its AFC West rival out of the playoffs.

Midway through a not-so-funny "Saturday Night Live" sketch, an actor playing Jesus was in the locker room discussing Denver's winning streak with what was supposed to be Tim Tebow and his teammates. After taking credit for helping the Broncos win six in a row, he was told the New England Patriots were coming to town next. "Oh, boy. Really? Wow. Did not know that," he said. "That's gonna to be a tough one. " It was, though it's hard to blame Tebow for the loss Sunday that derailed — at least temporarily — the cultural phenomenon that was sweeping the country.

The Raiders were blown out 46-16 by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, falling to 7-6 with their second straight loss and looking like anything but serious contenders in the AFC West. "I'm not going to let this team keep going backward," Raiders coach Hue Jackson said. "The last two weeks we haven't come close to playing or looking like the football team we've been.
