CHARLEMONT -- Here on a remote stretch of the Mohawk Trail, tucked into the gentle hills and near a zigzagging river, is the small Federated Church where one day in 1969 the composer and violinist Arnold Black and his wife Ruth, a keyboardist, thought it might be nice to start a music festival. The Mohawk Trail Concerts are now in their 38th season, and performances still take place in the same modestly appointed church, where the acoustics are good, the setting is intimate, and the piano lid is propped up by a pair of hymnal books.

AUSTIN, Texas - Claire Boucher shows up for an interview clutching three vinyl records under her arm. The selection is so telling, they almost seem like a prop. She's holding an album of Mariah Carey remixes and two more by Skinny Puppy, who were pioneers of electro-industrial music. She says the LPs were a gift from Canadian TV personality Nardwuar. As Grimes, Boucher makes music that splits the difference between those two artists. Her latest songs are catchy, sticky as toffee and meant to make you dance.

MAY 31-JUNE 3 WAKARUSA, Ark. Wakarusa 2012: A music festival in the Ozark Mountains may not sound like the kind of in-demand hipster gathering that the Coachella/South by Southwest crowd is accustomed to attending. And let's face it, it's not. However, that doesn't seem to bother the talent. An impressive array of artists show up for Wakarusa, which isn't bad for a gathering that also bills itself as a "camping festival. " This year's lineup includes a staggering number of bands.
