A Norfolk County deputy sheriff was killed in a crash Tuesday on Interstate 95 while driving to Quincy to serve in the honor guard at a funeral for the mother of a longtime correction officer, Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti said. Ryan Tvelia, 42, was in uniform and riding his department-issued Harley Davidson Police Edition motorcycle when it collided with one car and then was struck by a second car around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday. He was northbound near Exit 11 in Walpole when the crashes took place, State Police said.

Brian Kelly of the Kelly Automotive Group recently donated the one-year lease of a motorcycle to the Police Department. The town will pay only for insuring the motorcycle, which is the department's first; the lease's value was set at $3,900. Kelly operates two dealerships in town.

NEW YORK - E.J. Potter, aka the Michigan Madman, a legend of the US drag strip who earned his nickname riding 170 miles per hour on a motorcycle he fitted with a Chevy V-8, and who later went nearly 200 miles per hour on a three-wheel bike powered by a jet engine, died April 30 in Ithaca, Mich. He was 71. The cause was complications of Alzheimer's disease, his daughter, Alison Tiihonen, said. An unidentified man in his 40s died yesterday after being struck by a motorcycle on Massachusetts Avenue and Washington Street Sunday night, said David Estrada, a Boston police spokesman. Other pedestrians flagged down an officer at 8:43 p.m. Sunday. The officer observed a man lying next to a motorcycle, and parts of the cycle on the street. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he died, police said. There were no reports of injury to the motorcyclist.

Police say a motorcycle operator died from his injuries following a collision in Hartford, Vt. Hartford Police Sgt. Karl Ebbighausen (ebb-igg-HOUZ'-en) says the motorcycle operated by 45-year-old David Blake of Hartford collided with a car that pulled across his path Saturday morning. He says emergency medical technicians worked on Blake at the scene before the victim was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Police say the driver of the car, 47-year-old Brian Broe from the village of Wilder, was not hurt.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Larry Desmedt, a motorcycle builder called "Indian Larry" and known for his appearances on cable's Discovery Channel, died after crashing during a weekend stunt at an arena outside Charlotte. Mr. Desmedt, 55, fell off his motorcycle Saturday while performing before 8,000 people at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord as part of the Liquid Steel Classic and Custom Bike Series. He died Monday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, a hospital official said.

A pedestrian was taken to Boston Medical Center with life-threatening injuries last night after being struck by a motorcycle near 622 Massachusetts Ave. around 8:45 p.m., Boston Police said. Police, who did not identify the victim, shut down a section of Mass. Ave. between Washington Street and Harrison Avenue last night while they worked to reconstruct the accident. There were no reports of injury to the motorcyclist. The Police Department's homicide unit was called to the scene, though no charges have been filed.

Police in southern Maine postponed a checkpoint in Arundel, which was to make sure motorcycles have been inspected and are in compliance with state laws. The checkpoint was scheduled for Sunday afternoon between Limerick Road and Campground Road in the York County town. A new date will be announced in a few weeks, the York County Sheriff’s Office said. The checkpoint was the first of three planned this summer. Others will be conducted in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport at times and dates to be announced.

Maine motor vehicle officials say the state is shifting to a new motorcycle registration system. The changes are the result of a law enacted last year that requires motorcycle inspection stickers to be displayed on the vehicle's registration plate. The changes started in March and will be phased in over the next year. Inspection stickers will be placed in the plate's upper left corner. In order to accommodate the inspection sticker, motorcycle registrations, with some exceptions, will be changed to a fixed March expiration.

A Pepperell man was killed in motorcycle crash Saturday night in Nashua, N.H., officials said. New Hampshire State Police say a 23-year-old Massachusetts man has died in a single-car accident in Nashua. Police say Stewart Triehy of Pepperell, Mass., died Saturday night in the crash on the Exit 2 off ramp from the Everett Turnpike . A preliminary investigation indicates Triehy was traveling south on the turnpike. After taking the ramp he failed to negotiate a left curve and left the road, striking the rock side slope. He suffered severe trauma and died at the scene.

A Boston police officer has been transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash this afternoon, according to Boston police. TOKYO - A Harley-Davidson motorcycle lost in last year's tsunami has washed up on a Canadian island about 4,000 miles away, Japanese media reported Wednesday. The rusted bike was found with a large white container that its owner, Ikuo Yokoyama, used to store it. Yokoyama was located through the license plate number, Fuji TV reported. "This is unmistakably mine. It's miraculous," Yokoyama told Nippon TV when shown photos of the motorcycle. Yokoyama lost three members of his family in the March 11, 2011, tsunami.

State Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess led the successful push for breast cancer specialty license plates for cars and trucks in Maine. Now she's hoping to do the same thing for motorcycles. The New Hampshire Food Bank is raffling off a 2011 Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle to raise money to feed the hungry. The raffle is part of this year's Hogs Against Hunger Campaign and is a joint effort between the food bank and Laconia Harley-Davidson. The campaign's focus this year is to feed veterans, especially homeless veterans. The campaign has raised nearly $40,000 this summer. Laconia Harley-Davidson will hold a party Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. with free food and live music.

The Waltham office of Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp. said today that Travertson Motorcycles is using a variety of its design tools to develop new motorcycles, more evidence that Greater Boston is emerging as a hub for vehicle design work. Company engineers in Waltham have already been at work improving digital tools used by major automakers such as Ford, Honda, BMW, Jaguar, and Land Rover. And Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks isn't alone in providing services and tools for the auto industry.
