Amid the commotion that Miley Cyrus has morphed from a Disney star into a pop tart, a simple fact has been overlooked: Her new album isn’t half bad. Of course, that means it’s also only half good, but “Can’t Be Tamed’’ is full of the catchiest Top 40 hits money can buy. Ostensibly, Cyrus’s third studio release is her declaration of independence — from what, exactly, is anyone’s guess. Perhaps from adolescence, or her “Hannah Montana’’ shackles, or the public’s perception of her. At 17, Cyrus cares not about her reputation, and she’s rocking Joan Jett’s black leather pants to prove...

NEW YORK — Jessie J spent the last seven years crafting songs for her debut CD. And in that time she came up with a whopping 600 tracks. “[It] isn’t that many ’cause it’s less than 100 a year,’’ she said. “[There are] the bad ones that no one will ever hear … [but] I was young and the thing is, you have to write the bad ones to kind of know when something is good.’’ Luckily, the 23-year-old found 13 songs good enough to make it on her first album. The British newcomer — who won Critics’ Choice at this year’s Brit Awards — released her debut,...

NASHVILLE - Forget The Police, Justin Timberlake, or Bruce Springsteen. The undisputed hottest concert ticket of the year is for 14-year-old pop star Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" TV show. Fans are so desperate for seats to her 54-date tour, kicking off later this month, that venues have sold out in as little as four minutes and scalpers are getting four to five times the face value - creating a torrent of complaints from frustrated parents. "We knew it was hot, but we had no idea it was this crazy," said Debra Rathwell, senior vice president of AEG ...

WORCESTER - There is something comforting about Miley Cyrus, also known by the name of her rock star alter ego, Hannah Montana. She favors tights and glittery tops, nothing particularly skin-baring. She dances and pumps her fists in the air, but gyrations remain G-rated. As of today, we also don't have to worry about Miley forcing her cable network to contemplate a teen pregnancy special. That's Jamie Lynn. No, Miley seems to be just what she plays on TV: A teenage girl living out a fantasy.

Like all teenagers, Miley Cyrus is starting to learn about choices and consequences. Like most teenage entertainers, she is also becoming wise to the ways of making choices that will produce the most favorable consequences. Coming on the heels of l'affaire Vanity Fair, Cyrus's new album, "Breakout," finds the Disney Channel star returning to her factory setting of trying to please most of the people most of the time, without completely obscuring her own songwriting voice. She mostly succeeds on this appealing, compact album that's out today.

Miley Cyrus rippled the waters last week when she essentially disowned her current radio hit, a tasty slice of dance pop called “Party in the USA.’’ Asked in a video interview what her favorite Jay-Z song is, because “Party in the USA’’ mentions the radio playing it, Cyrus admitted she didn’t know anything by the hip-hop titan. In fact, Cyrus said she recorded the song only because she needed something for her clothing line and does not really even listen to pop music.

It's an unenviable position. Hannah Montana is the most famous underage pop star in America. But the girl pretending to be her - Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart - is living a lie. The lie has made Miley, the actor and the character, rich and popular. It has made her washed-up country-singer dad look shrewd. It's also made her exhausted. She could use her Disney Channel sitcom to end her double life. But the Disney employees charged with the direction of her future wisely thought she should solve this identity crisis where many a teenage starlet before her has: the movies.

For much of last year, the hottest act on the pop music circuit wasn't U2 or Bruce but Miley Cyrus, the 15-year-old actress-singer who plays Hannah Montana on the eponymous Disney Channel series. Tickets to her 55-city "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out as fast as they were printed. Parents of teens and tweens heard everything from prayers to tantrums when they tried to score seats. Enough of them succeeded to push the tour gross north of $36 million. Now, and quickly, comes a 3-D movie version of the stage show.
