Brian Elliott stopped 24 shots in his third shutout this season, David Backes added a goal and an assist and the St. Louis Blues beat the Calgary Flames 2-0 on Friday night. Alex Pietrangelo also scored for the Blues, who are 6-1-2 since Ken Hitchcock took over as coach. The Flames, who have been blanked three times in 21 games, got 22 stops from Miikka Kiprusoff. Backes gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal, powering his way past Flames defenseman TJ Brodie and lifting a shot over Kiprusoff's glove 10:39 into the game.

Sean Burke made 31 saves and Montreal-area natives Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis scored to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 2-1 victory over the Canadiens last night in Montreal. The Lightning snapped a two-game losing streak to move a point ahead of Montreal for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 72. Burke lost his shutout bid when Mike Ribeiro scored a power-play goal with 2:22 remaining. Flames 4, Avalanche 3 -- Jarome Iginla scored his 29th and 30th goals, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 26 saves to help host Calgary regain the Northwest Division lead.

Alex Ovechkin had a goal and a career-high four assists, Mike Knuble scored twice, and the Washington Capitals got 28 saves from Jose Theodore in a 6-1 home victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. The five points were a season high for Ovechkin. He scored his 29th goal with only 49 seconds elapsed to get the Capitals off to a quick start during their third game in four nights, then assisted on their next four goals. Both of Knuble’s goals came in the second period, boosting the lead to 4-0. He has five goals in his last five games.

Curtis Glencross had two goals and an assist to pace the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. The season-high five-goal output was a relief for the Flames after they managed just one goal in five of their previous eight. Calgary improved to 5-0 when scoring four or more goals. Lee Stempniak, Rene Bourque and Paul Byron also scored for the Flames. Defenseman T.J. Brodie, called up from the AHL on Nov. 9, got his first NHL point by assisting on Stempniak's goal.
