NEW YORK - On Saturday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum, Chris Kelly scored his 20th goal of the season after noticing how much trouble a clearing pass would cause the Islanders' Josh Bailey. In other words, it was a typical Kelly goal. "He's in the right place to score goals," said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "[Saturday] was a good example of that. He's coming in as a late guy, there's a loose puck, he pounced on it. It was a nice goal. I thought it was a great way to score your 20th.

DALLAS - Being a Newfoundland native and a lifelong Northeast Division resident prior to this season, Michael Ryder required some seasoning to adjust to life in the Western Conference. "Just the travel, I found, was a little different," said the first-year Star and former Bruin. "The road trips we're having are seven days, 10 days. That's the biggest difference. "You get home a lot later. The time zones, there's so many time zones, so that's different. The road trips take a while to get used to. " Other than that, life in Dallas has been pretty good.

Michael Ryder was not a fan favorite in Boston. He might even become Public Enemy No. 1 after his day with the Stanley Cup. As the Cup was being prepared for a helicopter flight yesterday from St. John's to Ryder's hometown of Bonavista, Newfoundland, Ryder set it on a table, which collapsed. And it is now sporting a new dent, the Associated Press reported. Ryder signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars in the offseason. JIM HOBAN

By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff Free agency opens at noon today. The Bruins will not be in the hunt for the big-ticket players. During GM Peter Chiarelli's watch, the Bruins haven't been prompt to open their checkbook when free agency opens. They made their biggest push in 2006, when they landed Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard on the first day. Chiarelli had been hired by the Bruins, but was still employed by the Senators. Jeff Gorton was serving as interim GM when the Bruins signed Chara and Savard.

What with baseball season in full swing, and the Patriots about to play meaningful games, we kind of lost sight of the Stanley Cup. Until, that is, we saw the video of Michael Ryder putting Lord Stanley 's silver chalice on a table in Newfoundland, and having the Cup topple over and hit the ground. "The first ding of the day," someone says as Ryder and others scramble to pick it up. Relax. It's not the first time the Cup has been dropped or otherwise defaced. In '08, Red Wing Kris Draper told reporters that his newborn daughter went to the bathroom in the trophy.
