Quarterback David Garrard signed a one-year contract Monday with the Miami Dolphins and said he was told he'll be given a shot at the starting job. He's not sure yet who else will be part of the competition, though. The Dolphins reached agreement with the former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback after failed courtships with Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn. They also hosted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith for a visit Sunday and may still consider signing him. "They didn't say for sure they were bringing another guy in, but they said it's a possibility, whether in the...

Ricky Williams, the 2002 NFL rushing champion, rejected a deal to serve a four-game drug suspension this season and return to the field next year. "Ricky indicated to me that he is no longer interested in resuming his career at this time," his attorney, David Cornwell, said yesterday. Williams needed to let the league know his decision by yesterday. He would have served the suspension for the Miami Dolphins' final four games. "Ricky Williams has declined to accept the terms of his reinstatement," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - New York Giants guard Chris Snee had a message for the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who remain the NFL's only undefeated team after the Giants shocked New England, 17-14, in the Super Bowl last night. "Thanks for supporting us," Snee said. "Your record stands for another year, I guess. " By tradition, members of the '72 Dolphins celebrate every autumn when the NFL's last remaining unbeaten goes down. This time, the party didn't happen until last night, when the Giants handed the New England Patriots their first loss - in their 19th game.

FOXBOROUGH — On a festive, unseasonably warm Sunday that felt something like the last day of high school, the New England Patriots yesterday finished their spectacular 2010-11 regular season with a 38-7 victory over the moribund Miami Dolphins. “It was a good way to end our season,’’ deadpanned Bill Belichick, now the first coach in NFL history with four seasons of at least 14 wins. The Steamroller Patriots closed their 14-2 campaign with eight straight wins, scoring at least 31 points in every game and compiling a turnover differential of 24-1.

Even in the offseason, the Miami Dolphins' quarterback carousel keeps spinning. After being spurned by Peyton Manning, the Dolphins had a brief, unproductive courtship with Matt Flynn, then turned their attention Sunday to Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers free agent. Smith left the Miami complex after a 5 ½-hour meeting. Dolphins officials declined to comment on any details about this visit. However, the visit could affect the Manning sweepstakes, because the 49ers are among three finalists for the four-time NFL MVP, along with the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.

The Chicago Bears have acquired Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins. There was widespread speculation that the Bears would go after a high-profile free-agent receiver such as Vincent Jackson, but they filled their biggest hole with a blockbuster trade, instead, sending two undisclosed draft picks to Miami. The deal announced Tuesday was first reported by Fox Sports. It's the first big move under new general manager Phil Emery, who replaced the fired Jerry Angelo, and it gives Jay Cutler the go-to receiver he's been seeking...

Touchdown, Peyton Manning. The former Indianapolis Colts quarterback landed late Wednesday afternoon in South Florida, drawing the attention of local TV news helicopters and NFL fans everywhere. His private plane arrived at a small airport 30 minutes from the Miami Dolphins' complex, but he then rode off in a different direction with the news media in pursuit. When his van reached Miami Beach, it pulled over in a church parking lot, and Manning emerged to tell reporters South Florida might not be his final destination.

A month of wrenching emotion for Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin took another turn Friday when he landed the Miami Dolphins' head coaching job. The deal was sealed less than two weeks after Philbin's 21-year-old son drowned in an icy Wisconsin river. The Dolphins confirmed the hiring in a news release and plan a news conference Saturday. Philbin, who has never been a head coach, first interviewed with Miami on Jan. 7. The body of son Michael, one of Philbin's six children, was recovered the next day in Oshkosh.

Pushing ahead with his career in the wake of personal tragedy, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin interviewed for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching job for a second time Wednesday. Philbin met with team owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland in New York City, where Ross has an office. Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has joined the list of candidates for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching job. McCoy completed an interview Monday, the Dolphins said. He's the first candidate to meet with the Dolphins since they were turned down Friday by former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who chose instead to become coach of the St. Louis Rams. Under McCoy this season, Denver's offense ranked only 23rd in yards and 26th in points. But McCoy won praise for adapting the offense at midseason when second-year pro Tim Tebow became the...

MIAMI -- The Kansas City Chiefs made a quick trip worth the trouble. With Hurricane Wilma scrambling the schedule, the Chiefs arrived less than six hours before kickoff for a rare Friday night game, then shook off any flight fatigue to beat the Miami Dolphins, 30-20. Trent Green threw for 289 yards last night against Miami's injury-depleted secondary, and the Chiefs totaled a season-high 462 yards while controlling the ball for nearly 42 minutes. Lawrence Tynes's three field goals included 51- and 52-yarders, the two longest kicks of his career.

DAVIE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick Jared Odrick is hurt again, and the latest injury might sideline him the rest of the season. “He’s done for a long time,’’ coach Tony Sparano said yesterday. Odrick was on the verge of returning from a broken right leg when he hurt his left foot at the end of practice Wednesday. The Dolphins haven’t decided whether to put the rookie defensive end on injured reserve, which would end his season. “We’ll see,’’ Sparano said.

Even with his team losing badly, Oakland Raiders linebacker Aaron Curry had to smile. He broke up a fourth-quarter pass with a jarring hit on Reggie Bush, who responded by rolling over onto his stomach and doing five pushups. Curry laughed and shook his head at the resilience of Bush and the Miami Dolphins. "They just flat-out beat us," Curry said. Once-woeful Miami won for the fourth time in the past five games Sunday by beating Oakland 34-14. The Raiders were outgained on the ground 209 to 46, had the ball for less than 22 minutes and gave up two TDs...
