Hiroki Kuroda was impressive on the mound for the New York Yankees. Only problem for the Bronx Bombers was that Kuroda's fellow countryman, Yu Darvish, was even better pitching for the Texas Rangers. Darvish is getting better every start and may be getting to a point where he will have a hard time topping himself, after striking out 10 and pitching into the ninth inning of a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. "You hear a lot of guys get hyped and he was everything that you'd heard," Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said.

Dropped as low as seventh in the batting order for the first time in eight years, Mark Teixeira didn't think it would make much a difference on what pitches he'll see. "I'm still Mark Teixeira," the New York Yankees first baseman said. "I still put up some pretty good numbers in my career, so I don't think they're going to just start underhanding it to me. I wish they would, but I don't think that's going to happen. " Bothered by coughing and a bronchial illness since the first week of the season, the two-time All-Star is batting .226 — 54 points below his career average —...

Mark Teixeira said he had no pretenses about the solo home run he hit off Felix Doubront with two outs in the sixth inning of Saturday's game against the Red Sox. At the time, Teixeira thought it would amount to nothing more than an afterthought after the Sox had streaked to a 9-0 lead. At no point did Teixeira ever fathom it would be the first salvo in a barrage of 15 unanswered runs for the Yankees, who erupted for seven runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to pin the Red Sox with a soul-crushing 15-9 loss before a Fenway Park crowd of 37,839.

Mark Teixeira hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, Curtis Granderson also connected, and the New York Yankees got three hits from Alex Rodriguez in an 8-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night. It was the fourth win in five games for the Yankees, who improved to 4-0 at Camden Yards this season. Teixeira had five hits in his previous 33 at-bats and was hitting .220 when he drove a 1-2 pitch from former Yankee Luis Ayala (1-1) into the right-field seats.

Mark Teixeira has left the New York Yankees’ game against Boston in the first inning with a bruised right knee after being hit by a pitch from Jon Lester. X-rays were negative and Teixeira will be re-evaluated Wednesday. Batting right-handed, the switch-hitting first baseman was struck squarely on the kneecap. Teixeira screamed in pain almost immediately and fell at home plate, rolling back and forth in the dirt with one hand on his knee. Teixeira could put little weight on his leg and was helped off the field.

The Yankees made two moves that dramatically increased the quality and depth of their rotation last week when they signed free agent Hiroki Kuroda and traded for impressive young righthander Michael Pineda. The Red Sox are debating to what degree - if any - they will respond to their rivals. One quick way would be to snap up one of the remaining free agent starters on the market, a group that includes Roy Oswalt, Edwin Jackson, and Joe Saunders. That would require adding to a payroll already sure to be beyond the luxury tax threshold of $178 million or...

NEW YORK - Conan O'Brien's show was blaring on the TVs in the visitors' clubhouse after another loss, yet there was little laughter. The late night host can take heart, though. There's only one thing that can lift the Mariners' mood right now. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira each homered and drove in three runs, Freddy Garcia stifled his former team, and the Yankees handed Seattle its 16th straight loss with a 10-3 victory last night. "They're staying together with this thing, it's just a hell of a thing we're going through right now," manager Eric Wedge said.

Victor Zambrano pitched six solid innings to win his fifth straight decision, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-2, last night in St. Petersburg, Fla., for their 16th win in 18 games. Geoff Blum and Jose Cruz Jr. homered in support of Zambrano (8-4), who hasn't lost in nine starts since May 15. The righthander allowed two runs on seven hits, walked four, and struck out three before being replaced by Jesus Colome. Tampa Bay improved to a major league-best 27-8 since May 20 and climbed back over .500 (37-36)

ARLINGTON , Texas - You're Nolan Ryan, president and CEO of the Texas Rangers, sitting in the stands all night with President George W. Bush, watching Albert Pujols unload on your team for three homers, five hits, and six RBIs in a 16-7 win over the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series. Now we know Pujols belongs to St. Louis, and we'd be shocked to see him sign elsewhere when he becomes a free agent after the World Series. But in this climate, who knows? The Cardinals have resisted signing their franchise player the past two seasons.

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff When Mark Teixeira decided to sign with the Yankees instead of the Red Sox in December of 2008, John Henry and Co. were furious. Henry and Larry Lucchino went to Dallas to recruit Teixeira on Dec. 18 and the meeting ended badly. The Sox felt Teixeira and agent Scott Boras were stringing them along to get a better deal from the Yankees. The Sox stormed out of the meeting, Henry sending e-mails to reporters saying they were out of the chase.

Chone Figgins and Troy Percival saved the Anaheim Angels, and gave them a little boost in the West race. Figgins had RBI hits in the last two innings and scored the go-ahead run on an infield grounder. Percival then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, and the Angels beat the Texas Rangers, 5-3, last night at Arlington, Texas, in the opener of a four-game series. "It's still a three-team race," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We never had the perspective that all we had to do is beat Oakland.

The Angels fell .001 behind the Rangers and Red Sox in the wild-card standings. Larry Bigbie homered, Brian Roberts tied a career high with four hits, and David Newhan was 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Orioles, who had a season-high 20 hits following their second 7-0 homestand in club history and first since 1969.

In 2005, the Texas Rangers had a problem. They had one too many young, talented first basemen. Mark Teixeira had a bit more big league experience, so he got the nod. He started 162 games that season, batting .301 with 43 home runs and 144 RBIs, with the occasional appearance as a designated hitter. Adrian Gonzalez filled in at first during those games, and spent a few games in the outfield or at DH. The rest of his time was spent waiting for a chance to be an everyday first baseman in the major leagues.
