Marc Savard remains bothered by post-concussion syndrome symptoms, according to GM Peter Chiarelli. Savard was recently examined in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario. Previously, Savard's symptoms included depression, headaches, and memory loss. Because the Bruins are well under the cap, Savard will not be placed on long-term injured reserve when the regular season starts. If, at any time during the season, the Bruins are in position to exceed the cap by Savard's $4.007 million annual hit, the center will then be placed on LTIR.

Marc Andre-Fleury hardly looked like a goalie who had just finished a highly intense third period. Fleury, back in net after getting a night off, made 28 saves and Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal that lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Boston Bruins 2-1 Saturday for their ninth win in 10 games. "Just came off a five-day break," said Fleury, sitting with a baseball cap on backward and smiling frequently. "It was nice to get back. " Matt Cooke had the other goal for the Penguins, who rebounded from a 1-0 loss at Toronto on Wednesday that ended a season-high...

The Bruins are not expecting Marc Savard to play in 2011-12. Savard has not been examined recently by team doctors. But Savard is still experiencing post-concussion syndrome, more than seven months after his 2010-11 season — and possibly his career — ended on Jan. 22. "Marc Savard won't play this year," said GM Peter Chiarelli. "Nothing has changed in our monitoring. He'll be examined and he'll be declared unfit to play. " Savard is signed through 2016-17. Savard's symptoms could wane, after which he might hope to resume his playing career.

Like any pro athlete who didn't get to write his own ending, Marc Savard remains hopeful that his days as a player are not over. Savard, however, is a realist. He remains addled by headaches, memory loss, and grogginess in the mornings, although he is free of the depression he suffered in the summer of 2011. Savard is 34, exactly a year removed from appearing in his last NHL game as a Bruin. Given the precariousness of his health, there is no doctor who would clear him for NHL action even if his symptoms waned.

Bruins forward Marc Savard, whose 2010-11 season ended Jan. 22 when he suffered a concussion, is still complaining of headaches, according to general manager Peter Chiarelli. Neither Savard nor the Bruins have ruled out the possibility of Savard playing in 2011-12 or beyond. However, given the nature and history of his head injuries, it is virtually guaranteed that he will not start the season. Savard, who turned 34 July 17, is signed through 2016-17. Savard's condition will not prevent him from participating in the Kawartha Invitational amateur golf tournament this weekend in...

Marc Savard missed out on the Bruins’ run to the Stanley Cup, playing just 25 games this season while suffering from postconcussion syndrome that has jeopardized his career. But his teammates made a point to mention him often during their 25-game postseason journey to their first championship since 1972. And yesterday, the playmaking center joined them in their “rolling rally’’ through the city. “It was tough watching sometimes and not being out there, but in the same sentence, I’m happy for the organization and the staff and everyone who put the time in and got...

P.J. Axelsson could very well be entering the stretch run of his Bruins career. The 34-year-old left wing has 796 NHL games to his name, all while wearing the Black and Gold of the franchise that nabbed him with the 177th pick of the 1995 draft. Axelsson is in the final season of a three-year contract. When the Bruins are fully healthy, Axelsson usually works on the fourth line and penalty kill. But if this is the last sprint for Axelsson in Boston, he's hoping it will be a long one. Last night before 17,565 at TD Banknorth Garden, Axelsson, ever the valuable plug-and-play...

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - According to general manager Peter Chiarelli, Marc Savard suffered a slight groin strain late in the second period of the Bruins' 3-1 win over Phoenix Saturday. Savard is day-to-day and will be re-evaluated today before the Bruins' practice at the Toyota Sports Center in nearby El Segundo. It is unknown whether Savard will be ready for Wednesday's game against Anaheim. Savard has been blessed with good health, playing in 82 games in each of the last two seasons.

WILMINGTON — Marc Savard knows that setting a timetable for a return from the effects of postconcussion syndrome would be a futile exercise. When the Bruins’ 33-year-old center gained medical clearance last week to begin full-contact workouts, there was talk that he might be back with the team by early December. But Savard knows his return will depend on his response in practice. And though the Bruins were still smarting from a 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes Friday, the good news yesterday was that Savard was on the ice, looking no worse for the wear as he centered a...

WILMINGTON - It's obvious that Bruins goalie Tim Thomas got a lift from playing in his first All-Star Game, though he quickly suppresses the grin that comes when he is asked about the weekend. But surely the recognition has helped puff up his chest - or his pads or something - as his play has been spectacular in the two games since, both victories. Coach Claude Julien used the word miraculous to describe his netminder. Captain Zdeno Chara, voted an Eastern Conference starter, has been an All-Star before, and at 6 feet 9 inches he can take no more puffing up. He likely expected to go to Atlanta.

RALEIGH, N.C. - There was no practice for the Bruins yesterday, a day after Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Hurricanes in Game 3 at the RBC Center. No meetings. No video work. Coach Claude Julien gave his players the day off with the hope that time away from the rink will help shake the Bruins from their two-game slide. "That's what this whole day off is about," Julien said. "It's taking a step back. Let's regroup here and go back to playing the type of game we know we can play.

Yesterday, the Summer of Savvy took another twist. Marc Savard signed a seven-year, $28.05 million extension Dec. 1, but six months later he was shopped — despite owning a full no-trade clause — as the Bruins sought cap relief and attempted to open a spot for rookie Tyler Seguin. In August, Savard’s contract, investigated by the league in December, was studied once more in the wake of Ilya Kovalchuk’s arbitration hearing with the NHL raising the possibility of deregistering the deal.
