Chimo, the young Arab Frenchman in Ziad Doueiri's romantic drama "Lila Says," tells us his life is changed when he meets the eponymous Lila, a blond sexpot who, according to him, is hot enough to provoke wars. "This chick could start a jihad," he exclaims. In this respect, Doueiri's second movie recalls the naughty-mindedness of 1998's "West Beirut," his earlier and much better coming-of-age yarn. Otherwise, this is an underdeveloped exercise in carnal awakening that thinks its characters are far more special than they ever prove to be. Played by Mohammed Khouas, 19-year-old Chimo spends his...

As a kid, I remember sluggishly hot days, tomato soup, and archery. I wanted to be home playing baseball with my friends. As an adult, my attitude’s changed. Even if for one night, it’s nice to get away from the clogged Expressway and live under the sky. Wildwood Family Camp, run by the Mass. Audubon Society in Rindge, N.H., offers three days of activities, meals, and that singalong spirit for roughly $200 a person.

Every year, for just one day and one night, Lila and I head to Bumpkin Island. It might be Boston’s greatest outdoor secret, a prime camping spot on the water’s edge for less than we’d pay to go to a movie together. You take any of a series of ferries from Boston or Quincy, but we prefer to head out from Hull. There’s free overnight parking and a breakfast nook at the dock. The only problem, for me at least, is what to pack. Lila generally doesn’t carry a lot. I remember two years ago being loaded down with gear while she, walking with just a stuffed animal, sat on the gravel...

For the first few seconds Friday night at the Berklee Performance Center, an audience of just over 800 older, cosmopolitan fans could hear Lila Downs before seeing her. Then her seven-piece band hit a chord, and the Mexican-American folk idol appeared on a platform at stage rear. She wore a broad smile, long pigtails, and a traditional Mexican dress, with the front cut away to reveal sturdy high heels, bare legs, and a miniskirt. A few audience members judged the outfit the sartorial equivalent of a mullet.

We stopped going to hockey games not because we lost interest but because Calvin was born and...

In a career approaching two decades, Lila Downs has been many things already. She's a vibrant singer, first and foremost, who unleashes a classically trained voice that thunders with operatic tones one moment and then caresses in the next verse. She's also a songwriter, an entertainer prone to bold attire and fierce dancing, and now a new mother. More than any of that, though, Downs has been a tireless student and ambassador of Mexican music. Since her 1994 debut, "Ofrenda," she has swung from rancheras, folk, and Latin jazz to cumbias, rock, and hip-hop.

Kids love what we learn to hate. Like trains. They don't notice the way the Red Line barely crawls into Harvard Square or how that suspicious odor is emerging from the passed-out dude sitting two seats over. No, in a child's eyes, trains represent change. Or maybe no car seat. I keep this in mind every time I head up to New Hampshire. Lila and I are typically on one of those getaways when Mommy has to correct so many student papers she needs us cast out. We leave her with the dog at the house in the woods and head to our favorite railroad, in North Conway.

(Photo by Mahmut Ceylan, Courtesy of Istanbul Music Festival) I'm not sure there's another living violinist I appreciate as much as Gidon Kremer. I've seen him perform several times and interviewed him once and I never get tired of his approach, which is intense physically, intellectually open-minded and always full of the unexpected. When I learned he would be performing at the Istanbul Music Festival during our stay, I knew I had to go. Beyond that, Kremer's concert took place in the Hagia Irene , a majestic surrounding.
