WATCH THE THRONE: JAY-Z & KANYE WEST At: TD Garden, Monday, 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $57-$247.50. 800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com If it came with a scratch 'n' sniff sticker, "Watch the Throne" would smell like a shiny new car. A Rolls-Royce, to be exact. Everything about the album has the regal air of luxury, from the gold-plated artwork to the lyrical references to extreme wealth to the outsize personalities who made it. And that title! Only Kanye West and Jay-Z, two rock stars masquerading as rappers, could get away with that.

It wasn't quite "A Milli" but it was awful close: Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" sold 964,000 in its debut week for the second-best first-week sales of the year. The figures were released by Nielsen SoundScan on Tuesday. Only Lady Gaga sold more this year. Her "Born This Way" hit No. 1 with 1.1 million sold thanks in part to a one-day offer from Amazon.com to buy the album for 99 cents. Lil Wayne just barely missed his own sales record. "Tha Carter III" sold just over 1 million when it was released in 2008.

Lil Wayne, "Tha Carter IV" (Cash Money/Universal Records) Since "Tha Carter III" made him a legitimate pop star, Lil Wayne spent eight months in jail and released three albums, including a collaborative effort with his Young Money crew. He also forgot the art of songwriting. That 2008, Grammy-winning blockbuster succeeded because the genius of free association rhymes found discipline: Nearly every "Carter III" track had a theme, storyline or single emotion for Wayne to wrap his witticisms around.

Lil Wayne took advantage of his Video Music Awards performance by dropping his anticipated new album the very same night. The tattooed rapper closed the Video Music Awards with tunes from his new album as an ad blinked on the bottom of the screen reading: "Be the first to download 'Tha Carter IV' on iTunes. " The album was to be released digitally at midnight on Aug. 29 and in stores later that day. "There's only one man brilliant enough to piece this plan together," rapper Drake said as he introduced Lil Wayne.

You might blame or embrace David Guetta, the French superstar DJ/producer, for the influx of fist-pumping electro beats onto the pop charts. Either way, you can't deny the guy's influence. It's odd timing, though, that Guetta has decided to drop one of this year's best summer-like party records right before Labor Day. The mastermind behind many hits, including Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," doesn't break new ground on his fourth album. Instead, he brings together many of today's pop superstars and offers a platform as swooshes, squiggles, and propulsive beats elevate them to club...

No one comes out of prison the same way they went in. Michael Vick went in another megalomaniacal millionaire athlete and came out a model of contrition and a freakishly rejuvenated quarterback. Rapper DMX goes in and out of jail like it's a Store 24 (he was released last month and went back in last week), and he looks crazier by the mug shot. Lil Wayne did eight months in Rikers Island on a 2007 gun charge. He got out last November. Enough time has passed to make his jail time seem like a sabbatical.
