Boston has the North End, famous for Italian fare. The South End is home to bistros, tapas restaurants, and gastropubs, cheek by jowl. Allston, Chinatown, and East Boston showcase the flavors of the world. So what is Boston’s best restaurant neighborhood? None of these. It’s Cambridge. That’s right. Not in Boston at all. All the way on the other side of the river — a journey Bostonians seem eternally loath to make. The trip is neither long nor arduous. With its views of water and sailboats and skyline, it’s downright pleasant (well, unless you’re driving over the BU Bridge)

Guests attending a dinner Monday night at Legal Sea Foods in Park Square will sit down to a meal of black tiger shrimp, cod cheeks, and hake. Billed as a dinner of “blacklisted’’ fish, it’s designed to bring attention — in a provocative manner — to the ongoing debate over what constitutes sustainable seafood. The dinner underscores the tensions between fishermen who believe regulations are too restrictive and conservationists who feel they don’t always go far enough.

It was strictly out of pity that I pointed my car toward the South Boston Waterfront Sunday night to trade a few coins for clams at the massive new Legal Sea Foods complex. Poor Roger Berkowitz, I figured, had eaten so much mercury-tainted swordfish that he had completely lost his mind. I mean, who builds three restaurants with 700 seats under one roof hard by an industrial park in a corner of Boston where precious few people actually live? As I pulled up, something unusual caught my eye — people.
