Guests attending a dinner Monday night at Legal Sea Foods in Park Square will sit down to a meal of black tiger shrimp, cod cheeks, and hake. Billed as a dinner of “blacklisted’’ fish, it’s designed to bring attention — in a provocative manner — to the ongoing debate over what constitutes sustainable seafood. The dinner underscores the tensions between fishermen who believe regulations are too restrictive and conservationists who feel they don’t always go far enough.

Agar Supply, New England's largest independent food distributor, has partnered with Legal Sea Foods to launch a new label that will allow restaurants and supermarkets to track fresh fish all along the supply chain. Legal Sea Foods' wholesale division, Nor'Easter, will supply nearly all of the fresh fish marketed under Agar's "Nautifish" brand, including haddock, cod, salmon, and tuna. It was strictly out of pity that I pointed my car toward the South Boston Waterfront Sunday night to trade a few coins for clams at the massive new Legal Sea Foods complex.
