Jim Belushi was in the Christmas spirit during his appearance at Symphony Hall with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. The star of the orchestra's annual "A Company Christmas at Pops," Belushi narrated "A Visit From St. Nicholas" and also crooned a bit, treating the crowd to a version of Elvis Presley 's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town. " Before the show, Belushi and his son Jared joined their Martha's Vineyard buddy Fred Mascolo and artist Rich Dunbrack for dinner at Scampo… . Reprinted from late editions of yesterday's Globe. The motto of the Wayfaring Strangers is simple: "All kinds of music, all of the time. " That's how leader Matt Glaser describes the expansive gumbo that passes for the group's repertoire. Elements of folk, gospel, bluegrass, classical, and jazz -- the sound has also been called jazz-grass -- combine in a progressive, invigorating manner. The group has made two albums on Rounder Records and has caught the attention of Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra, which invited the Strangers to...

The Boston Pops opened its 124th season last night in Symphony Hall. All the traditional festive elements were in place - a brassy John Williams number, a filmic paean to Boston, the classic Souza march, and the balloon drop - but between the lines it was a bit subdued by Pops standards, and I imagine intentionally so. Too much symphonic razzle-dazzle would feel out of touch in an economic recession; none at all wouldn't be the Boston Pops. The highlight of the night was Broadway eminence Barbara Cook, with her signature brand of earthy, tell-it-like-it-is lyricism.

HOLIDAY POPS 2011 At: Symphony Hall, Wednesday night Reprinted from late editions of yesterday's Globe. With unseasonably warm temperatures and pelting rain, it didn't feel much like Christmas on the way into Symphony Hall Wednesday evening. But conductor Keith Lockhart urged the audience to ignore the elements and celebrate the spirit of the season, and for two hours on this opening night of the Boston Pops' annual holiday performances, he and the orchestra, along with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, made that possible.

Standing under a black umbrella amid a hard rain is probably not what Martina McBride had in mind for yesterday. But that’s where the multiplatinum country singer found herself, commanding the Hatch Memorial Shell stage on the Esplanade with the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart behind her. Their rehearsal marked a fast and stunning turnaround for the Pops’ most high-profile national event. On Thursday afternoon, just days before the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, Lionel Richie canceled his appearance as the musical guest after he...

The conventional way to go about shooting a television segment on a public beach would be to apply for a permit. But when the comedy troupe Improv Asylum wanted to shoot a “Deadliest Catch’’ parody on Duxbury Beach, they took a more streamlined approach. The sketch — for “Improv Asylum’s Vanity Project,’’ the summer series premiering Saturday on WCVB (Channel 5) — was called “Clam Wars.’’ So company cofounder Norm Laviolette popped into town hall in Duxbury, where he lives, for a shellfishing license.

With an extra serving of razzmatazz, Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops opened the orchestra’s 125th season Tuesday night in Symphony Hall. It was mostly a night of pops historical and unintentional: that is, the program itself was a tasting menu of music from the eras of Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, and Lockhart, but it was also punctuated by an embarrassing technical malfunction as balloons gathered at the ceiling of Symphony Hall kept...

Reprinted from late editions of yesterday's Globe. There is something so fabulously not magical about attending a concert being taped for later broadcast during a PBS pledge drive. It's where you get to see a harried makeup guy jog on stage to powder the star's face between songs, and where the surprise guest isn't some local yokel but John Mayer - doing Frank Sinatra. It's definitely the only place you see Sting, Josh Groban, Chris Botti, and the Boston Pops make four attempts at getting "Shape of My Heart" right.

The Boston Pops: American Pastimes with Kenny Loggins At: Symphony Hall last night Surely it was no coincidence. Yesterday was the first day of summer, and there Keith Lockhart was at Symphony Hall, leading the Boston Pops through a program front-loaded with songs about baseball. But he knows summer in this town can be a fickle season that sends us indoors seeking air conditioning. Thus, a movie-music theme. And by that point, why not bring in ’80s soundtrack king Kenny Loggins to bat cleanup?
