High school students on Hawaii's Kauai island will be playing football in the daytime again this fall to make sure their stadium lights don't harm threatened and endangered seabirds. The Kauai Interscholastic Federation on Wednesday said teams would play night games until the fledging season begins and young seabirds begin leaving their nests to head out to sea on Sept. 15. Four early evening games will be played when the moon is expected to be bright, and not when fledging activity will be at its peak.

Alexander Payne makes movies about men on the brink — of a nervous breakdown, of personal or professional ruin and, ultimately, maybe even some hard-earned peace. That was true of Matthew Broderick's scheming teacher in "Election," Jack Nicholson's searching retiree in "About Schmidt" and Paul Giamatti's sloppy oenophile in "Sideways," and it's certainly true of George Clooney in "The Descendants. " As real-estate lawyer Matt King, he finds everything in his life is in flux and on the verge of collapse simultaneously.

KILAUEA, Hawaii -- Searchers with dogs looked for bodies in mud and debris yesterday after a dam break released a roaring, tree-snapping torrent of water and raised fears about the safety of dozens of similar dams across Hawaii. Search crews found one body and looked for as many as six other people staying in the same house. The century-old earthen dam collapsed before dawn Tuesday after days of heavy rain swelled the Kaloko Reservoir behind it. The water swept away houses on two multimillion-dollar properties in the rugged hills of the island of Kauai, cutting a 3-mile path of...

KAUAI, Hawaii - Winter had taken its toll. Before my friend Sarah or I had a meltdown, we decided to escape to Hawaii's Garden Island to recharge. It took no time to adjust our internal clocks to the rhythm and pace of island life. But after a couple of days of swimming and tuning out everything except what time we needed to flip over, the allure of Kauai's scenery wooed us off our beach blankets. Few places on earth offer the visual splendor and natural diversity of this Pacific oasis.

‘A Perfect Getaway’’ may be a lousy title for a suspense thriller, but once you see the film, it does make a certain multi-leveled sense. In the same way, the movie itself turns out to be a neatly crafted B-movie pleasure - nothing fancy, but the gasps, screams, and (mostly) intentional laughs are there. Anyway, “The Honeymoon Killers’’ was already taken. It’s one of those city-mice-in-the-wilderness affairs, with newly married yuppies Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich)

The sense of déjà vu is overwhelming. Surely you have seen that beach, that reef, that waterway before, yet this is your first trip to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Ah, but you have been to the movies. That's where you have seen those sites. From "White Heat" in 1933 to " Komodo vs. Cobra" in 2005, Kauai has been the setting for more than 75 films and television series. Among them: "Jurassic Park," "Fantasy Island," "Blue Hawaii," "Gilligan's Island," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Thorn Birds," "Donovan's Reef," and "South Pacific.

Whenever I accumulate a lot of frequent-flier miles, I think about all the yet-unvisited places they could take me, then usually end up going back to Hawaii. There is no destination quite like our 50th state, with its combination of sunshine, sightseeing, surfing, and some schlock. Certainly the flight is long, but as I cross the continent and a portion of the Pacific, I remind myself that palm trees, beaches, and mai tais are waiting. For those who feel the same way about the Aloha State, here is a little of what's new: ...

LIHUE, Hawaii - Opponents of the first passenger-vehicle ferry between major Hawaiian Islands greeted Governor Linda Lingle with boos and interruptions as she tried to sell the project to residents of Kauai. Despite the angry reception yesterday, the Republican governor said the Hawaii Superferry would resume service between Oahu and Kauai on Wednesday under Coast Guard protection. Residents, many of whom oppose the ferry on environmental grounds, packed the 1,000-seat Kauai War Memorial convention hall.

Hawaii's governor declared a disaster for two islands on Tuesday after three days of relentless rains caused flooding and a sewage spill on Kauai, where officials were dealing with tree-blocked roads, closed schools and dangerous surf. Gov. Neil Abercrombie's declaration includes Oahu, where Honolulu is located. A brown water advisory was issued on the island after two manholes overflowed and wastewater flowed into the ocean. There were also warnings of possible hail, lightning, rockslides and water-clogged roads.

The military shot down a short-range ballistic missile off Hawaii with a new, more sensitive interceptor missile. The Missile Defense Agency says the USS Lake Erie detected and tracked the short-range missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai on Wednesday night. The Pearl Harbor-based guided missile cruiser then fired the interceptor, which took out the missile. The agency says the new interceptor has a two-color infrared seeker, which allows it to detect targets further away.
