WAAF's morning show host Greg Hill broadcast from Harvard Stadium Wednesday. Why? It seems Hill's producer Anthony "Spaz" Parziale has been talking smack about Julian Edelman , so the Pats receiver challenged him to a few football drills. Pats backup QB Ryan Mallett threw 10 passes to Edelman while "Spaz" attempted to break up the play. Edelman caught the ball all 10 times.

A few quick thoughts on the final picks of the Patriots: DB Nate Ebner, Ohio State (sixth round) - A former rugby standout, Ebner hasn't played a ton of football, but if you watch his rugby highlight film, you know he's a mad man who could be a terror on special teams. - Once he's given time to learn the game, it wouldn't be a surprise if his role expanded. Ebner is obviously unafraid of coming up and tackling. That kind of talent could lend itself well playing as a linebacker or safety in subpackages.

Julian Edelman today was named AFC special teams player of the week for his performance in the Patriots' 34-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. In the third quarter of the nationally televised game, Edelman returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown. It was Edelman's second punt return for a touchdown of his career. He set the franchise record with a 94-yard return in the 2010 regular season finale vs. Miami on Jan. 2, 2011. Undrafted rookie Sterling Moore has played only four games with the New England Patriots — and already he's tutoring other members of the makeshift secondary. The group has been hit so hard by injuries that even wide receiver Julian Edelman has filled in. But while the defensive backs keep learning, the Patriots keep winning. This week, the Patriots signed defensive back Nate Jones, an eight-year veteran who was cut by the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 5. He could play Sunday when New England (8-3)

By Joe Sullivan, Globe Staff Statistically, especially on the offense, there were some positives for the Patriots. Quarterback Tom Brady, of course. He threw for 387 yards, not a bad follow-up to his first two games, when he threw for 517 against the Dolphins and 423 against the Chargers. Rookie running back Stevan Ridley gained 44 yards on seven carries, a 6.3 average. Julian Edelman averaged 10.3 yards on three punt returns. Stephen Gostkowski boomed six kickoffs into the end zone.

INDIANAPOLIS - Against the Patriots on Oct. 10, 2004, Wes Welker, then playing for the Dolphins, became the first player in NFL history to record a field goal, extra point, kickoff, punt return, and kickoff return in the same game. The Patriots beat Miami at Gillette Stadium, 24-10, and about the only thing Welker didn't do for the Dolphins that day was catch a pass. But an impression was indelibly left on the New England decision-makers. Drawn by his versatility, they gave Miami two draft picks in a trade for Welker prior to the 2007 season.

INDIANAPOLIS - It seems that the Giants wide receivers are looking forward to seeing Julian Edelman line up opposite them. He is, after all, a converted wide receiver himself, someone forced into defensive duty by the Patriots injuries. Mario Manningham, for one, wasn't backing off his comments yesterday after saying earlier in the week he hoped to line up against Edelman. "He plays wide receiver," said Manningham. "He's not a real defensive back. Did he get drafted as a defensive back?

The Patriots are Super Bowl-bound for the seventh time in franchise history and the fifth time in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, but some readers are looking ahead for New England and wondering who could be coming and going once the season ends. There's also a little bit of second-guessing on one play call in the AFC Championship game and a status update requested on Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallet. Q: How is rookie quarterback Ryan Mallet progressing? Is Brian Hoyer or Mallet a better choice for the replacement should Tom Brady get knocked out of the...

FOXBOROUGH -- Most of the Patriots were either already gone today when the locker room was opened to the media, hurriedly leaving, or in no mood to discuss the reports about offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien becoming the next head coach at Penn State. Players arrived at Gillette Stadium this morning for team meetings, but did not practice. One player who did stop and chat was Julian Edelman, who has helped the Patriots on all three sides of the ball, but has gotten to know O'Brien in his role as a receiver.

There was plenty of excitement around Price after he opened the preseason with five catches for 105 yards and one touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After nearly four months of games, one thing seems certain about the New England Patriots. There's a lot of uncertainty. Sure, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski probably will make big plays and the defense likely will give some up. And, somehow, coach Bill Belichick and his staff will make critical adjustments when problems occur. But just how good are the Patriots as they start their bye week with a 13-3 record, wins in their last eight games and the AFC's top seed? Can they make the desired progress once they return from Monday's day off?
