The first time he came to the plate at Fenway Park as a member of the Oakland A's Monday night, former Red Sox right fielder Josh Reddick said he was surprised by the tepid response he got from the crowd. "I didn't get a whole lot of love from the fans," Reddick said Tuesday night after the A's scored an adventuresome 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. "I mean, they've been on me pretty good the last two days. I thought I was liked a little bit more than that. But they've been ragging me pretty good out there.

Jim Leyland is getting quite the view of a suddenly productive Brandon Inge, in the other dugout, beating his former Tigers. Inge hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs for the fourth time in five games, Josh Reddick homered twice and had a career-high five RBIs, and the Oakland Athletics pounded Detroit 11-4 on Friday night. "He's really swinging well right now. He's got a second wind, and it's a good thing obviously for him," said Leyland, Detroit's manager. "He's swinging the bat as good as I've seen him swing it for a while.

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff Josh Reddick, who was traded to the Oakland A's in the Andrew Bailey deal, said he had the same surgery to his wrist that Carl Crawford recently had. Reddick, attending this evening's Boston Baseball Writers' Dinner at the Westin Copley in Boston, said, "I think it was the exact same surgery (cartilage). It's not that tough of a rehab process as long as you're there working out - and we know Carl always works out - he'll be just fine. "From what I've read he'll be missing opening day and at most he's gonna miss maybe a week.

Newcomer Brandon Inge hit a game-ending grand slam to cap a five-run ninth inning rally that led the Oakland Athletics to a 7-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the ninth off Grant Balfour (1-1) when Eric Thames hit a leadoff triple and scored on Kelly Johnson's two-out single before the A's rallied to win it in the bottom half. Michael Taylor, who struck out his first three at-bats, hit an opposite-field fly that landed just inside the right-field line for a leadoff double off Francisco Cordero (1-2)

Carl writes: "In 1925, Wally Pipp lost his job to a young Lou Gehrig. Is it possible that "Wally the Green Monster" is soon to be joined by Kevin "Wally" Youkilis, as it appears that with a chronic ailing back, he may also have just lost his job. Will Middlebrooks looks like he is up for more than just a cup of coffee.

Before Monday night's 11-6 demolition of the Oakland A's, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was asked what he liked most about his team during its recent 6-1 road swing through Minnesota and Chicago. "The season is an evolution," Valentine said. "Everyone wants it to be a creation that you just mix up in the chemistry lab and then pour out the final product. That's not what happens. It evolves. "Our pieces are evolving together - very good starting pitching, we put the bullpen together and feel like we have a nice little order going there, and everyone's contributing offensively.

Clay Buchholz Monday night became the first Red Sox pitcher to give up five or more earned runs in five consecutive starts in 72 years. He also improved his record to 3-1. Amazing. The guy with the winningest record on the Red Sox has an ERA of 8.69. The Oakland A's are the Oakland F's when it comes to hitting. The not-so-great grandsons of Charles O. Finley came to Fenway with a robust team batting average of .205 in 23 games, easily the lowest in the majors. You're usually in trouble when your whole team is hitting 5 points north of the Mendoza Line.
