Stephen Colbert isn't running for president — at least not yet. During Thursday night's episode of "The Colbert Report," Colbert legally transferred his super political action committee to his friend and Comedy Central cohort Jon Stewart. Dropping by from "The Daily Show," Stewart happily signed the documents and accepted the post, which was ceremonially observed by the two holding hands and bodily transferring the PAC powers. The move potentially paves the way for Colbert to enter the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina, his home state.

You can scrutinize the elements of a talk show in order to judge it. Is the set too cozy, or too cavernous? Are the segments - the monologue, the sketches - strategically ordered and paced? Are the interviews superficial, or meandering? But the bottom line is between the host and you. How much do you like the humor and temperament of that person - this month’s late-night newcomers are Wanda Sykes, Mo’Nique, and George Lopez - and do you want to spend an hour at his or her disposal?

And the big theme of Oscar's 80th annual ceremony last night was . . . the past. Snore. We were repeatedly shown clips of grand acceptances from the good old days - Bette Davis giving the statue to Marlon Brando, for example. The approach smacked of desperation, as if the Academy didn't want us to forget its former greatness. After all, the Oscarcast has lost viewers since its high of 55 million in 1998, the year "Titanic" won, and only one of this year's best-picture nominees - "Juno" - has grossed more than $65 million.

Last week was a great week to be a comedian who makes a living skewering politicians. You just can't ask for better material than a US representative sending lewd text messages to teenage boys. Jon Stewart had been hammering on Mark Foley and the Republicans on "The Daily Show," and he got in a few more digs at the Wang Theatre on Friday night, but it wasn't his political material that drew the biggest laughs. It was his reaction to his microphone stand breaking. He'd been leaning on it and tipping it from side to side all night, casually delivering his...
