Joba Chamberlain told Yankees general manager Brian Cashman that doctors say the reliever could resume pitching off a mound by July. Chamberlain, still recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery last year, dislocated his right ankle while playing on a trampoline with his son Thursday. Cashman related the news before Saturday's 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers, which featured the first spring training home run by slumping Raul Ibanez. "It's just going to take time to heal," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Mike Mussina is doing all he can to help the New York Yankees cling to their slim playoff chances. The 39-year-old righthander earned his 17th win, and the Yankees got home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady in a 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays last night. "We're just trying to win ballgames any way we can. I'm trying to contribute on my day," Mussina said. Joba Chamberlain came off the disabled list for New York and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

NEW YORK - Bobby Abreu hit two home runs and Alex Rodriguez hit one to back another strong start from Joba Chamberlain as the Yankees routed the Baltimore Orioles, 13-3. Abreu did most of the damage in a rare start at DH, adding a double to his two homers while giving the Yankees a big boost as they head into a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. Forty-one of New York's last 55 games are against teams at or above .500. "I don't really like too much the DH. It's one of the ways to get a day off," Abreu said, smiling.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A day after clinching a playoff berth, the Yankees began preparing reliever Joba Chamberlain for a heavy postseason workload. The 22-year-old righthander pitched on consecutive days for the first time last night, helping fellow rookie Phil Hughes (5-3) beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 3-1, to keep alive New York's hopes in the AL East. Chamberlain struck out B.J. Upton to escape a jam with runners at first and second in the eighth inning. The Yankees have brought him along slowly, but Joba Rules have been eased during the past week, putting him in position...

NEW YORK - Cliff Lee knows he probably won't win all of his starts this season. That doesn't mean he isn't going to try. Lee threw seven sharp innings last night to beat Chien-Ming Wang in a matchup of unbeaten starters, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees. "I've got to focus on this next outing and if I do that and continue to do that, things should go the way they have gone," Lee said. "Obviously, I can't expect to put up zeros every single time but it's my job to put up as many as I can and get deep into the game and give the team...

Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain dislocated his right ankle while playing with his son at a local spot that had a trampoline, jeopardizing his immediate future after yet another odd misstep for New York's bullpen at spring training. There was no timetable for Chamberlain's return. The team did not say whether the 26-year-old pitcher was using the trampoline equipment when he was injured Thursday. The accident at a play area came two weeks after All-Star setup man David Robertson hurt himself moving boxes at home.

Oakland’s new version of the Big Three pitchers came up awfully small once again against the New York Yankees. Gio Gonzalez allowed a three-run homer to Nick Swisher and the Athletics generated little offense against A.J. Burnett as they lost their 10th straight game to the Yankees, 4-2 on Wednesday. The A’s came into the series on a four-game winning streak with their top three starters lined up to face the powerful Yankees. But New York battered Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson and Gonzalez for 18 runs in the three-game sweep.

Joba Chamberlain parked his 240-pound frame in front of home plate and waited for Russell Martin’s toss from near the backstop. Felix Pie, at a lithe 185 pounds, tried to twist around the Yankees reliever for an insurance run. No chance. The big Nebraskan wouldn’t budge. Chamberlain’s block of the plate in the eighth kept the Yankees within a run of the Orioles, and host New York’s bats did the rest to complete a comeback from five runs down to beat Baltimore, 6-5, in 10 innings last night to sweep the rain-shortened series.

NEW YORK - Carl Pavano said he didn't hear the cheers when he walked off the mound after striking out Alex Rios, the years of fan animosity seemingly turned to adulation in just six short innings. He did hear Joe Girardi, though, when the Yankees manager made a request. "I asked for six innings and I got exactly what I asked for," Girardi said. "He did what he had to do. He went out there and he made pitches. " The oft-injured Pavano held down Toronto in his first start at Yankee Stadium since Opening Day last year, and New York managed just enough offense against A.J. Burnett in a 2-1...

NEW YORK - Joba Chamberlain struggled with his control, walked off the mound in the third inning, and threw his glove in the dugout. His first major league start was a memorable one, all right. Just not for the reasons he'd hoped. Chamberlain lasted 2 1/3 innings and Roy Halladay held the New York Yankees in check despite some control problems of his own, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 9-3 victory last night. "I wanted to get my team a lot deeper into the game and it wasn't very good," Chamberlain said.

Brian Roberts hit a three-run homer, Jake Arrieta allowed one run in six innings, and the unbeaten Baltimore Orioles thrilled a sellout crowd in their home opener by defeating the Detroit Tigers, 5-1, yesterday. On a gorgeous afternoon at Camden Yards, the Orioles extended a surprising winning streak that began with a three-game sweep at Tampa Bay. Off to its best start since 1997, Baltimore (4-0) has not yet trailed, hasn’t given up more than one run in a game, and has outscored the competition, 17-4.
